When one thinks of urban office designs, earthy tones and lush greenery rarely come to mind. Most offices are located in urban jungles where glass and concrete dominate the skyline, relegating nature to the sidelines. Our client, CA, had procured a small office space with a vision to convert it into a refreshing space for work and approached us with a challenging brief. We were given the task of converting a 330 sq. ft. space into a 3 cabin + pantry office for 15 PAX.
This Urban Office is Designed in an Organic, Natural, and Unconventional | Studio MAT
The office was a rectangular space with one large window, which was a source of light. Moreover, we wanted the entire office to have light and ventilation flowing through. We were inspired to design the office in a manner that was very organic, natural, and unconventional.
We tried to optimise the space by keeping the director’s office near the window, followed by a meeting space, and then an entire work area with a pantry. However, we used fluted glass to create appropriate privacy as well as enable the passage of light.
These partitions are the essence of the office and give it a unique language. We aimed to create a space that draws you to pause, reflect, and resist the maniacal pace of our times.
The design optimizes the space by transforming it into a multipurpose ‘foldable box.’ In a way when these sliding partitions open, they create various spaces for discussion, work, and meetings.
When the partitions are closed, they provide privacy and solace for these activities. These foldable sliding glass panels flood in ample light in the space.
Suspended from the ceiling and walls, the workstations keep the ground clear, making the office feel spacious and voluminous. Fabricated from MS box sections, these workstations hang elegantly, freeing up floor space.
By using this strategy, the space appears clutter-free and generous. The design incorporates these suspended members to create shelves for planters. This breaks away from the monotony of the space and gives an idea of your typical 9-to-5 office.
The element of green makes the office breathe as opposed to the pollution outdoors. It creates an illusion of being outside. We have also created ample space for file storage. The design uses wooden frames with fluted glass and rattan panels to partition the spaces.
The composition of Rattan wood and flutes adds a vibrant attitude to the space. These panels give the rooms a very earthy feel to them. Terracotta accent terrazzo stone adds a fun element and breaks the monotony of the space.
Concrete floors and amber pop on the floor; these earthy materials complement the space. Various textures of rattan, fluted terrazzo, cement, and wood give a very calm and earthy feel to the office.
This 330-square-foot studio is an amalgamation of exposed surfaces and organic textures. Steering away from the rigidity of a conventional office, this design embodies a friendly co-working environment.
