The south Indian house is essentially an expansive apartment situated in the posh Prabhadevi locality of Mumbai for a South Indian family, of a corporate banker and a porcelain floral artist. The well-travelled couple, now residing in Mumbai, envisions a reflection of their South Indian roots in their house.
Editor’s Note: “Adorned with the classic Athangudi tiles and bringing the essence of a South Indian home, this abode in Mumbai weaves a poetic narrative. Every corner of the abode whispers tales of traditional elegance and reflects pieces of craftsmanship excellence. With intricate details and periodic splash of colourful tiles, the abode is a haven of comfort and luxury.” ~Simran Khare
This South Indian House in Mumbai Exhibits The Client’s Timeless Collectibles | Dimensions
With the Puja corner exuding a vernacular feel, every niche of this home has a story to tell the distinguished guests they host from time to time.
The design ideology was to narrate a story about their timeless collectibles. The journey of tastefully incorporating these curiosities in multiple corners of this home was a truly exhilarating experience.
The story begins with the first look of the foyer installation of Parijat flowers all over Lord Krishna and the grandeur of the main door, which is a masterpiece of craftsmanship from the artistic town of Karaikudi.
Walking into the house, we see a beautiful pathway inlaid with Parijat flowers in mother of pearl that leads to the master bedroom.
The intricacy showcased on the master bedroom door reminds us of the antique temple doors. This 4500 sq. ft. apartment overlooking the Worli sea link from the spacious living has ample day light and ventilation.
The transition from marble into a colourful splash of printed tiles with wood pillars resembles the traditional Chettinad courtyards with Athangudi tiled flooring. The textured ceiling adds character to the space, and the elements of wood bring in warmth.
The apartment also houses a small, vibrant studio for our client overlooking the garden deck while she works on some of her exclusive creations.
The dining ceiling has the client’s wedding saree sandwiched between glass. Meanwhile, the pendant light in the middle was made from the brass pots they were gifted.
The terracotta jaali wall, floral installations, and elaborate yazhi brackets are other elements that complete the space.
The bedrooms, each looking out to the sea, are curated to the senses of each of the family members. They are minimal in concept but distinct in style.
