Steering away from our comfort zone of delicate, elegant colour palettes, this sprawling apartment in Kolkata for a young, newly married couple is a study in vibrant bursts of colour, warmth, and visual storytelling. A once-upon-a-time four-bedroom home, one of the rooms has been converted into a multi-functional home office-cum-den, with the other three being the master and guest rooms; and a bedroom for the parents when they visit. We chose the design and style of each room to distinctly define its purpose and reflect the homeowners’ personalities in this apartment in kolkata.
This Sprawling Apartment in Kolkata is a Study in Vibrant Bursts of Colour | AB Design
The large artwork, which lends a burst of orange across the living and dining rooms was the starting point for bringing in vibrant tones and colours in this home. Its exaggerated length also filled up what would otherwise be an empty wall running up a double-height ceilinged room.
This painting bathes the entire room in warmth. The veneer paneling on the adjacent wall and ceiling, along with the sinuous colour-blocked lines on the console, also complement it.
For focal balance, monochrome patterns—such as the herringbone upholstery on the settee or the black and white resin inlay dining table—add a polished refinement to the space.
Brushed brass gilds the legs of the dining table and the accent points of its chairs. These are paired against the striking marble panel that runs through the height of the wall behind it. Mouldings with brass flank on either side to quietly exaggerate the essence of glamour here.
With an interplay of shades of grey on the floor’s geometric tiles and rich burgundy fronts on the lower cabinetry, the kitchen maximizes form and function with its tastefully eclectic design. An appliance garage concealed behind a rolling shutter keeps all the electronics in this space neatly tucked away, avoiding clutter on the countertop.
We converted the apartment’s fourth bedroom into a home office for the lady of the house. This also doubles as a den for lounging. The brief for this space was for the interiors to be easy-breezy. It also has to feel fresh, lively, and open, with no dark tones or materials.
There was also a requirement for ample storage, which we placed within cane-shuttered closets surrounding the desk. A composition of faces by Clay Men adds a spectrum of colours to the wall above the plush orange sofa.
Every element in the master bedroom echoes understated luxury, drawing the eye immediately to the miniature chandeliers hanging above each bedside table.
Its intricate metal detailing echoes across the mirror hanging above the vanity. The teal splash across the artwork, upholstery, and bed linens is the hero in the room.
We left the walls in this room neutral, adding an elegant touch with molding that frames them in panels.
Hints of brass inlay adorn the walls—in continuation with the detailing across the home—finding their way into the master bathroom around the basin and the door frames.
To create the luxurious cosiness of a guest room, neutral tones paired with fine lines on the bedding make this space a dream bedroom for visitors.
While panels of floral wallpaper behind the bed replicate the dreaminess of a quaint English cottage, the brass-detailed white domed bedside lamps hint at the glamour in details found across the rest of the apartment here.
To complement this, we cocooned an otherwise monotone bathroom with terrazzo flooring and walls for visual play.
Choosing a more mature and elegant colour palette for the couple’s parents, who will visit the home frequently, this bedroom is swathed in soothing tones and textures paired with a collection of abstract art.
The wall behind the bed displays an interplay of panelled materials, pairing dark veneer with marble and pattern-embossed upholstery. The adjoining bathroom is a serene retreat with a tranquil blue floral tiled wall.
