Burma Burma Mumbai celebrates their second inning with a stunning restaurant at the Oberoi Mall in Goregaon. In the new space, Burma Burma, the only pan-India Burmese specialty restaurant and tea room brand create a stage to display the cuisine, culture and cooking styles of Burma. Elements of colonial design in the pillars, arches, and stained-glass panels in the facade give a context to the history of Burma Burma Mumbai as do the pagodas and traditional Burmese paintings.
Burma Burma Mumbai Reveals Their Second Stunning Restaurant | Minnie Bhatt Designs
The facade of the restaurant is long and curvilinear. The green arches in the facade offer a glimpse into the restaurant, and what stands out is the paintbox shade of colours in the hanging pagodas, hand-painted cabinets, murals on the wall, artefacts from Burma on display shelves, and dramatic tiling patterns.
Since the restaurant has a lot of depth, it was decided to keep the kitchen towards the end. So the restaurant opens with a veranda framed by green arches and pillars, followed by a main dining area in the centre and a private dining room in the far end. As you walk in, the three areas within the restaurant showcase a distinct design story but blend seamlessly with each other.
For the first zone, Minnie Bhatt of Minnie Bhatt Designs, which has designed all the Burma Burma restaurants and tea rooms since its inception, created one prominent point of visual engagement – a huge six-feet pagoda suspended over a central seating area.
A large hand-painted wall of foliage, inspired by the wall murals in Bagan, Myanmar, compliments this feature. This veranda which is partly open has rafters on the ceiling to reinforce the veranda aesthetic.
Designs etched on the inside of the rust-red pagoda, made of fiber, provide guests sitting below it with a view of the floral designs. On the floor, the black and white tiles add drama to the space. Moreover, thruster seating under the pagoda creates a central seating area.
The first and second zones are separated by the now familiar green arches. The second zone has the main seating area and a huge tea bar, which is the evidently highlighted in every Burma Burma. Furthermore, the tea bar apron has teal blue panels and a Udaipur green marble countertop.
The display behind the bar has two kinds of cabinetry. The closed ones have hand-painted foliage, while the open shelves on either side have a backlit cane that becomes a backdrop for artefacts hand-picked from Burma.
The red lacquer-finish hanging lights are the cynosure of attention in the main dining area. Clustered above the central seating, these lights and the printed pattern floor tiles below contrast with the neutral colour palette of the upholstery.
The periphery of the floor area has a plain tile to coordinate with printed tile. Tall bar seating against the bar and offers another seating option.
The walls with their two-tone texture indeed provide a subtle backdrop to decor elements in this section.
The last section is the private dining room (PDR), another signature feature of Burma Burma. This room is discreetly placed behind sliding wooden trellis shutters.
A huge 15-feet customized artwork printed on linen wallpaper occupies a major portion of the wall in this room. Silk wallpaper installed beside the artwork adds more luxury to this room.
The artwork depicts a typical slice-of-life scene from Burma and is visible across the entire restaurant. Mint green tables with a glass top are coordinated with a long cerulian blue sofa.
Every new restaurant from Burma Burma has something unique to offer. At the Oberoi Mall restaurant, large wall murals depicting foliage in a peaceful palette represent the lush green landscape of this tropical country.
