An Artistic Affinity for Curved surfaces | Obaku Design

Curved surfaces, subtle pastel colors, ornamental pendants and craft ‘Aagam’, a residence in Surat by Obaku Design.

Scientific exploration elegantly illuminates the human brain’s inherent penchant for curved surfaces. The most plausible explanation for our fondness for all things curvy is that they evoke the beauty found in the natural world.

Editor’s Note: Obaku Design’s Aagam breaks free from the conventional minimalist fascination for crisp lines. The architect’s belief that “Nature is Curved” is reflected in the minute details, which begin with the amorphous entrance door design. From the maroon swivel chair to the sage green bedboard, the organic approach comes down to the soothing pastel colour choices. The curved elements foster sophisticated modern-minimal interiors while losing the traces of tradition. – Gopika Pramod

Curved surfaces

Introduction

Designers frequently opt for curvilinear designs to convey a sense of fluidity inspired by elements in nature. Like the ocean or forest, as a part of designer’s architectural inspiration. Our lead designer, Jinesh Takodia, also embraced this design theory. The project, photographed by Nitish Lekhadia of Studio 2:3, aimed to craft a space that combines curvilinear and rectilinear elements.

Door design

Adopting a minimalist, modern, and artistic concept, the design embraces biophilic principles by integrating natural materials. It also incorporates curvaceous and organic forms. The front entrance features a gracefully curved paper veneer, while the interior walls combine rectilinear elements with occasional white accents.

Living room

To infuse a sense of fun and vibrancy into the living room, we incorporated powder blue leather cushions and paired them with a maroon swivel chair.

Curved surfaces

TV unit and area

A sleek wooden swing hangs in the room, offering a unique charm. The colors in an abstract painting, like the maroon shades on the large artwork behind the swing, can set the mood.

Curved surfaces

We combined vibrant pastel hues and a playful style by blending modern pieces with thrifted treasures.

Kitchen area

Using a harmonious color palette of soft powder blue in the kitchen and dining areas, paired with a clean white ceiling.

The allure of curved, flowing surfaces in design is unrivaled, leading to their resurgence as a modern trend.

By integrating nature-inspired shapes, organic curves, and bends, rooms can be revitalized, fostering a positive atmosphere for occupants.

Curved surfaces

Pink bedroom

Blending dusty pink tones with a touch of white achieves a feeling of equilibrium and unity. Incorporating deeper shades of pink conveys sophistication rather than a youthful atmosphere.

The interplay of various pink shades in the artwork introduces a sense of depth and dimension, injecting a vibrant burst of color.

Green Bedroom

The use of a serene and subtle sage green combined with white in the color scheme imparts a revitalized and expansive feel to the room. The bed designs crafted from pure teak wood, along with robust wardrobes featuring a simple matte grey PU finish, create a well-composed ensemble.

The custom-made teak wood bed, exuding warmth, forms a striking contrast with the green backdrop, and it is complemented by coordinating side tables.

Beige room

The master bedroom exudes a warm amber ambiance, with a subtle patterned paper veneer serving as the focal point on the wall.

Curved surfaces

The wall is divided into two sections, one featuring veneer and the other adorned with beige marble, both situated behind the bed.

Curved surfaces

The bed is completely upholstered, accented by a delicate rose gold border, and accompanied by a white side table with a contrasting gold rim. The client’s desire was for a bright and snug space with a serene atmosphere, and the room’s generous size and lofty, sloping ceilings offered ample design possibilities.

Green pink room

The kids’ bedroom blends vintage and modern styles with a colorful pastel rainbow mural on the wall. It caters to two siblings, a 4-year-old girl and a 9-year-old girl, with pastel tones, playful furniture, and their art on display.

Despite its size, the room feels cozy, with symmetrical furniture placement, hanging lights, and plush toys for a playful vibe.

The room’s moon-shaped white ceiling and plain grey flooring add an elegant touch. Soft toys and hanging banners complement the pastel color scheme.

It’s the most inviting room in the house, creating a calm and joyful atmosphere. The home cleverly uses space, soothing colors, and a modern design to meet the client’s needs.
