Editor’s Note: A modern residence with a side note of ethnic tranquility is what this abode is all about! Kota stone and brick patterns tune themselves to become the most traditionally rooted space. Crafted by Altitude Designs, this single-story farmhouse graces a sprawling parcel of land at the southwest corner, strategically positioned for direct access from the main gates.
This deliberate placement ensures enhanced privacy across the rest of the site. It also embraces lush farmlands and winding pathways that guide visitors to charming outdoor seatings.
The architectural excellence of this residence embodies a seamless blend of functionality and simplicity. It harmonizes all activity zones on the ground level while reserving the upper level for a terrace.
Embracing a sustainable ethos, the design integrates expansive flush windows adorning the front facade and incorporates brick-clad walls. Furthermore, mangalore tiles are purposefully chosen to minimize the maintenance requirements across the building’s lifecycle.
A tour of the 1BHK enclave commences from the “otla,” a transitional space merging indoors with the outdoors, adorned with Lipan art-inspired wall plaster and a traditional jhoola. The flooring additionally narrates a compelling story of resourcefulness, integrating leftover Kota and Jaisalmer stone construction waste into design.
While one may pause and soak in the beauty of the rich landscapes of the house, large wooden doors at its entrance beckon you into its humble, culturally diverse interiors.
Beyond this threshold lies an uncluttered living area adorned with a textural medley. Further, exposed bricks, plaster, concrete, wood, and stone—creates a visual and tactile tapestry.
Simplicity and functionality are the core motives of the spatial layout, which is showcased further in the minimal furnishings adorning the Kota stone flooring.
The exposed concrete ceiling, embellished ingeniously with wooden beams forming a coffered design, enhances aesthetics and serves as a housing conduit. The wiring and lighting fixtures overall spotlights the firm’s commitment to functional design ingenuity.
This commitment is echoed in the verandah’s ceiling as well, showcasing free- flowing curves that cleverly conceal wiring, serving both an aesthetic and functional purpose seamlessly.
An exposed concrete staircase forms the backdrop of this setting and ascends gracefully, unveiling a storeroom and terrace above. Artfully illuminated by a skylight and fixed clerestory windows, the space orchestrates a delightful and warm chiaroscuro effect throughout the day on the brick wall behind.
Supported by two wooden columns, the staircase thus transforms into a living canvas capturing intimate user movements with its wooden brass handrails and boxed treads.
Through an archway overlooking the living space, the dining and kitchen area emerges, elevated on a platform to demarcate different functional zones. Embracing the traditional Indian dining culture, a low-rise dining table with cushions facilitates seated floor dining.
A large pichvai cow painting within a recessed arch infuses a serene and spiritual aura, complemented by a dining cabinet and console featuring intricate wooden carvings and Jaisalmer stone accents.
Continuing the design narrative, the blue indigo tiles of the dining extend towards the kitchen, where a similar aesthetic is adopted through wooden shutters taking precedence. An adjacent utility space connects to the caretaker’s quarters outside, ensuring easy functional convenience.
The bedroom adjacent to the main entrance continues the earthy theme with minimal yet sleek furnishings for its interiors.
Offering panoramic views of the surrounding farmlands, the space prioritizes functional element. A traditional two-poster bed flanked by pichvai paintings, wooden bedside tables, and a traditional wardrobe, all accentuated by charming wooden coffered ceilings.
The attached washroom, adorns in sunny yellow hues complemented by wooden-framed mirrors and Jaisalmer stone. It results in a space that leaves the body invigorated and the mind refreshed.
This charming yellow theme extends to the powder room as well and aids in reinforcing the refreshing ambience throughout the house.
Consciously crafted with a harmonious interplay between user needs and natural landscapes, Madhuban embodies a thoughtful design ethos rooted in present traditions.
Despite challenges in procuring local workers, the utilization of locally sourced materials, including refurbished wood for doors and windows, exemplifies an architecture deeply rooted in environmental sensitivity and respect for local practices. Thus, as its name suggests, Madhuban resonates as a melodious ode to love within its natural setting.
