  • Tropical Design Meets Indian Tradition In This Modern Apartment | BRS Design Co.

Designer Bhumika Redkar, an Interior designer and stylist from BRS Design Co., recently completed a 3,800 sq. ft. tropical design home in Kalyan, Thane.

The designers crafted this home for a hospitable family with a strong emphasis on welcoming guests and hosting gatherings. Known for their warmth, the couple embraces visitors of all age groups and lifestyles. To reflect this spirit, the design introduces traditional flairs and tropical elements in select areas of the house, seamlessly blending them with modern contemporary themes.

    Client Brief

The client sought a design that embraced contemporary trends while preserving a strong sense of tradition. To achieve this, the architects combined two 3BHK units and reimagined the existing layout, including the washrooms. A spacious living room with ample air circulation and abundant natural light topped the client’s list of priorities. To meet this, one wall of every bedroom, as well as the north and south walls of the living room, features full-height UPVC sliding windows. Tropical touches at the entrance, passages, and kitchen further create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

    Living Room

The interiors follow a modern-contemporary style, infused with a tropical vibe that creates a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

Botanical flooring patterns, dark teal-green seating, and artifacts with botanical motifs bring the tropical theme to life, while wooden finishes add warmth. Ceiling fans further complement and complete this relaxed style.

The grid-patterned ceiling molding aligns seamlessly with the square shapes of the display, creating a complementary design language that lends the space a sophisticated look.

Intricately detailed 3D stone carvings introduce a traditional flair to the design concept, while a free-standing jhula complements and completes the overall aesthetic.

    Kitchen

Spacious, minimalist kitchens with clean lines are rare, but here the ample area allowed for the creation of a modern and luxurious space. The design seamlessly accommodates cooking, storage, a microwave, OTG, dishwasher, double-door refrigerator, two sinks, and even a breakfast counter for casual dining and socialising.

This kitchen brings together all aspects in one cohesive space. Light grey flooring paired with white acrylic overhead storage lends a sophisticated look, while wooden laminates add warmth. A touch of botanical design on the partial flooring introduces a playful tropical vibe, balancing elegance with freshness.

    Master Bedroom

The interiors present a perfect blend of modern and traditional styles. In the master BEDROOM, a serene and peaceful ambiance takes shape through a lavender and grey palette that exudes sophistication and calm. Accents of plum introduce a touch of luxury and elegance, completing the space with understated refinement.

The design style draws inspiration from mandala art and delicate floral colors and patterns. To balance the dominant feminine elements, grey and beige tones are introduced, creating a harmonious and neutral backdrop.

    Master Washroom

The muted-color washroom is defined by understated hues that create a serene and calming atmosphere. Subtle tile textures add depth without overwhelming the space, while light-colored fixtures blend seamlessly into the overall palette. Warm beige tiles complement the design, resulting in a peaceful retreat that feels both inviting and refreshing.

    Kids Room

Designing a KID’S bedroom for siblings of different age groups—a girl and a boy—was an engaging and rewarding challenge.

We incorporated cool blue and green tones to evoke relaxation and tranquility, steering clear of stereotypical concepts. Instead of relying on typical color choices, the design creates a gender-neutral environment that feels inclusive and welcoming.

Functional furniture and a comfortable study area, accented in fresh, serene teal, create a cool and calming vibe. Interactive elements like a world map, football shadow box, and themed decals spark imagination, while a matte black cozy oval bed adds a contemporary touch to the room.

    Kids’ Washroom

Designing this asymmetrical kids’ washroom presented several challenges. Nearly every wall had to be straightened for tile installation, and the flooring was raised to accommodate proper drainage. Fitting a pendant shower within the shower cubicle and installing a geyser under the ceiling added to the complexity. The design incorporates iconic teal tiles in a geometric embossed pattern, balanced by light-colored flooring to neutralize monotony. Satin gold sanitary fixtures and a stylish three-flow pendant shower complete the playful yet sophisticated space.

    Guest Bedroom

The minimalist and simple design of the guest bedrooms draws inspiration from natural wooden textures and subtle floral patterns.

The primary objective in designing these guest bedrooms was to achieve a minimalist aesthetic that remains visually striking and memorable.

    Study Room and Passage

The study rooms are designed to be minimalist and distraction-free, fostering better focus and concentration. Personal touches such as Kalamkari art, motivational quotes, artwork, and sculptures add character, creating a positive atmosphere that encourages creativity and thoughtful engagement.

In this space, we incorporated principles of Vastu Shastra to ensure a harmonious flow of energy. Traditional arches and Kalamkari patterns add a distinctive Indian flair, while tropical motifs in the passage flooring are strategically arranged to avoid cut tiles, combining aesthetics with thoughtful functionality.
