Nestled within a verdant, gated community in North Bangalore, the Dubey home stands as a quiet testament to the enduring power of an open concept, minimal design and functional living. Conceived for a family of three, this three-bedroom residence challenges the notion that luxury must be defined by opulence. Instead, it champions a more profound kind of richness—one found in abundant natural light, seamless connection to nature, and spaces designed with a deep understanding of daily life.
An Open Concept And Minimal Design Define This Opulent Home In Bengaluru | ma+rs
The project began with a straightforward brief from the client: to create an open concept home that was both minimal and highly functional. We embraced this mandate by adhering to the timeless principle of “form follows function.” The house is not a collection of rooms, but a series of interconnected volumes carefully calibrated to the family’s needs and the site’s unique attributes.
Positioned on a corner plot, the home intentionally opens up to the north and east, drawing in soft, ambient light and framing views of the majestic ficus trees that line the property. This deliberate orientation ensures privacy while maximizing a connection to the serene, natural surroundings.
The narrative of the Dubey Home unfolds through a clear spatial hierarchy. The ground floor is the heart of the home, a dynamic and open concept space designed for communal living. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are visually and physically connected, fostering a sense of togetherness and making it easy for the family to interact, whether they are cooking, eating, or relaxing. This public zone is a vibrant hub of activity, characterised by its fluid movement and the constant play of light.
In contrast, the private zones are strategically placed for seclusion. The primary bedroom suite is tucked away in the northeast quadrant, separated from the living area by a subtle yet effective visual divider—a thoughtfully designed foyer and a modern Puja unit.
Inside, a clean canvas of white walls and gray floors sets a calm, neutral stage. It is here that the true spirit of the house comes alive—not from the static materials, but from the dynamic elements brought in by its inhabitants.
The architectural expression of the Dubey Home is one of quiet strength. The material palette is intentionally minimal and muted, ensuring the home blends harmoniously with its surroundings rather than dominating them.
A staircase, a sculptural element in itself, leads to the first floor, a space dedicated to the daughter and her activities. It houses her bedroom, a dedicated study, and a home office, offering a quiet, private domain for focused work and rest.
This transition provides a moment of calm, allowing the space to feel like a true sanctuary. The kitchen, located in the southwest, is a hub of efficiency, opening to the dining area and a small vegetable garden on the west. This layout not only optimizes functionality but also invites nature into the daily routine.
The colors of the furniture, the warmth of bespoke carpentry, the art pieces made by the client, and the vibrant life of the family itself are what fill the space with personality and warmth. This approach ensures the home remains timeless, with its character evolving alongside the people who live in it.
The upper level also features a large, eastern-facing terrace with a covered deck, providing an ideal vantage point for enjoying evening teas as the sun sets in the west. This outdoor space is a natural extension of the home, a tranquil retreat for quiet contemplation or social gatherings.
The primary structure is a conventional frame construction with concrete block walls, finished with a subtle plaster and paint. The true character of the facade comes from the strategic use of locally sourced gray slate cladding. This textural element provides volumetric segregation, subtly articulating different parts of the building and adding a layer of sophisticated visual interest.
The Dubey Home is designed with a deep sense of environmental responsibility. The building’s height was deliberately kept low to ensure it does not stand out or disrupt the existing natural foliage. The structure is nestled within the landscape, its form a humble companion to the towering ficus trees. The careful planning of setbacks was a key consideration, guaranteeing ample natural light and cross-ventilation, a crucial passive cooling strategy in Bangalore’s climate, even as neighboring plots are developed in the future.
Beyond passive design, the project incorporates several active sustainability measures. A robust groundwater recharge system and a rainwater harvesting system are in place, with collected water reused for flushing, car washing, and gardening.
The home is also equipped with a solar water heating system and solar panels for electricity. This significantly helps reduce its energy footprint. The use of terracotta tiles on the terrace provides natural thermal insulation. It acts as a simple yet effective strategy that keeps the rooms below cool.
In its entirety, the Dubey Home is a celebration of thoughtful design. It demonstrates that an open concept house can be both elegant and unpretentious. The design combines technological advancement with deep roots in its heritage. It is a home that finds its beauty not in grand gestures, but in its quiet harmony with its inhabitants and the environment.
