This Restaurant Interiors Project Celebrates Culture & Luxury Together | P&S Associates

[Sassy_Social_Share]

Ananda is envisioned as a refined hospitality destination celebrating authentic Gujarati cuisine through an atmosphere of cultural continuity and understated luxury. The restaurant interiors draw inspiration from the historic pol houses and heritage havelis of Ahmedabad, known for their intimate courtyards, carved facades, and artisanal craftsmanship.

Reimagining Heritage in a Contemporary Setting

The interiors reinterpret these architectural elements within a contemporary dining environment. Reclaimed architectural and decorative components sourced from heritage homes bring historical authenticity to the space, while traditional elements such as carved parnals and courtyard-inspired chowks anchor the spatial experience.

Courtyards as Social Anchors

These courtyards act as the heart of the restaurant, structuring movement and creating moments of openness within the interior. The design evokes the spirit of traditional pol living—where architecture fosters community, conversation, and shared experiences.

Rather than functioning solely as a restaurant, Ananda creates a destination for slow dining, where ambience and cultural storytelling become as meaningful as the cuisine itself.

Balancing Heritage with Contemporary Elegance

The client envisioned a hospitality environment that honours Gujarati heritage without appearing nostalgic or overly ornamental. The challenge was to express regional identity through materials, craft traditions, and art while maintaining a contemporary and elegant design language.

Designing for Diverse Experiences

The space needed to cater to guests across age groups and occasions—balancing grandeur with comfort and intimacy. Careful spatial planning was essential to ensure layered seating zones, visual privacy, and smooth circulation across the restaurant.

The design also required a dedicated Private Dining Room to create an exclusive yet cohesive space for celebrations and intimate gatherings.

Integrating Gujarati Craft into a Cohesive Design

The final design seamlessly weaves together multiple expressions of Gujarati art, craft, and architecture into a unified spatial narrative. Traditional techniques such as lippan wall finishes and tikri mirror work are revived and integrated with restraint, allowing craft to become an intrinsic part of the architecture rather than decorative embellishment.

Symbolic cultural references are introduced through Mata ni Pachedi artworks, which add depth and storytelling to the interiors while reinforcing the project’s connection to regional traditions.

The restaurant accommodates approximately 100–110 guests, arranged through a series of intimate seating pockets that maintain openness while offering privacy. A dedicated Private Dining Room designed for 20–22 guests provides an elegant setting for special occasions.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the ambience. Warm lighting, bespoke furniture, handcrafted surfaces, and a restrained colour palette create an environment of quiet luxury. Subtle regional references embedded throughout the design reinforce cultural identity without overwhelming the experience.

Ananda ultimately emerges as a serene and immersive hospitality destination—where architecture, craft, and cuisine converge to create a memorable dining environment that extends beyond the meal itself.
