  • This Peaceful House in Kolkata Embodies the Principles of Wabi-Sabi | Infinity Atelier

A young couple (Mr. And Mrs. Ganguly) seeks a peaceful retreat house that is both serene and minimalist, with a strong connection to the natural environment and a rustic escape. The aim was to create a space that exudes tranquility, using natural materials and organic structures. The Wabi-Sabi approach was chosen by our studio to meet their aesthetic preferences and requirements.

The 1,275 sq. ft. flat in Kolkata’s Siddha sky project beautifully embodies the principles of Wabi-Sabi, emphasizing the acceptance of imperfection and the understated elegance of simplicity. It is called ENSO because The Zen symbol ENSO, represents the absolute, the duality of life, and the imperfection inherent in all things, is a perfect representation of the design approach taken. The house serves as a physical manifestation of these philosophical concepts.

Editor’s Note: This placid retreat is the family’s escape from hustle and bustle into a cozy sanctuary. Enveloped around the Wabi-Sabi concept, this house is the showcase of accepting imperfections while staying grounded. Each corner reflects the concept of The Zen symbol with its rustic hues, soft curves, and organic quality of design. Reviving sustainability while subtly incorporating modern amenities shapes this house into a harmonious blend of the client’s personality. ~Rajvi Dedakiya

Handmolded shelves made from clay and lime adorn the walls, adding a tactile, organic quality to the space. The arches bring a soft, sculptural element to the room, contributing to the overall Wabi-Sabi aesthetic.

    Interior Design

A butcher block-style long table serves as the centerpiece, emphasizing the beauty of natural wood grains. This piece anchors the room with its rustic charm.

The theme of arches continues throughout the house, including the doors, also creating a cohesive design language that ties the different spaces together.

In the porch and various indoor areas, rattan-style pots house lush greenery, additionally, bringing a fresh contrast to the predominantly beige color palette.

The den area introduces a touch of sleekness with a fern green wooden bookshelf and cabinets, adding a subtle pop of color while maintaining the natural, earthy vibe of the home. This blend of styles adds depth and character to the overall design.

    Cultural Richness

The ENSO house is enriched with handcrafted elements sourced from various cultural hubs, From Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok, items like wooden flower vases, and jute wall hangings introduce organic textures and serene accents. Vietnam contributes with metal gongs, and antique blue pottery depicting the Confucius era, each piece carrying historical and cultural narratives. Furthermore, Shantiniketan offers wooden flute glass and ceramics from Lipi Bose Ceramic Boutique, including bowls, containers, plates, and a ceramic ant mount, all of which enhance the home’s connection to craftsmanship and natural beauty.

    Sustainable Aspects

Repurposed Materials: The use of reclaimed wood and other repurposed materials highlights the commitment to sustainability. This not only reduces environmental impact but also adds to the story and character of the space.

Energy Efficiency: Thoughtful incorporation of energy-efficient lighting and ventilation systems ensures that the home is as sustainable as it is beautiful.

    Challenges and Solutions:

Time Constraints: With a strict budget and tight deadline, sourcing affordable materials was essential. Collaborating with local Kolkata craftsmen and sourcing materials from Bengal and beyond effectively managed costs while maintaining high quality.

Balancing Imperfection with Modernity: The challenge of blending Wabi-Sabi imperfections with modern amenities was met by integrating subtle high-tech features into the design. Additionally, these elements enhance the natural aesthetic without overshadowing its inherent beauty. Therefore, the result is a home that feels harmonious, grounded, and truly reflective of the client’s desires.
