Editor’s Note: “With its exposed laterite walls, majestic roof forms, and intricate wooden details, this residence finds its muse in the timeless architecture of Kerala. Cradled by verdant paddy fields and an endless pond, the landscape seamlessly melds with the interiors. A natural material palette and Kerala handloom furnishings cocoon the inhabitants in comfort and serenity.” ~Simran Khare

The living room is a harmonious blend of whites with European-inspired wall panels. A bold blue sofa, accompanied by solid wood armchairs encased in terracotta fabric, keeps the palette consistent. Embracing the contemporary theme of the home, we’ve incorporated wall panels and trims on the walls and a wallpaper-clad ceiling to amplify the height of the living area.
The minimalist yet sleek TV unit, in a bold shade of black, is elevated by delicate beadings and statement light fixtures. Additionally, the handles, in a subdued gold finish, enhance the entire space with a rich and luxurious look.
Moving into the dining area, a double-height cutout allows streams of natural light to flood the space. Thus casting a soft glow upon the furnishings below. Here, a cluster of lights suspended from the first floor cascades through the cutout. Thus infusing the room with a sense of airy sophistication. Veneer paneling above the lights serves as a unifying element. It seamlessly bridges the various levels of the home and creates a sense of visual continuity.
In the heart of the home lies the kitchen, which features an open layout with plenty of storage. A striking combination of blue and wood tones, accentuated by sleek black accents, lends the space a contemporary edge.
At the same time, a white backsplash adds a touch of luminosity. Arch grooves on the shutters and an island counter further enhance the kitchen’s aesthetic appeal.
The pooja room has a calming white and gold theme, with a custom-made blue wallpaper matching the house accents. The jali on the west wall allows natural light to fill the space throughout the day. Thereby casting shifting shadows and creating a serene atmosphere. During peak hours, it projects the full image of Ganesh onto the backdrop. This design exemplifies the concept of sociography, utilizing light and shadow to enhance the space’s aesthetic appeal.
Adjacent to the staircase leading to the first floor, the puja room wall boasts CNC-cut partitions, infusing a traditional touch into an otherwise modern space. Here, the ancient meets the contemporary in a seamless union of past and present, paying homage to the rich cultural heritage that informs the villa’s design ethos.
Ascending to the first floor, one is greeted by a living area that exudes an air of understated elegance. The floor features an interesting layout with tiles that add visual intrigue, and a comfortable swing with large windows becomes a place to relax.
The kids’ room, which can also be used as a guest room, has been designed with versatility in mind. Instead of a traditional kids’ theme, we opted for a more mature yet playful look, suitable for both children and guests.
The highlight wall features an organic wall panel along with a complementary wallpaper, creating a balanced and aesthetically pleasing backdrop.
In the master bedroom, a standout headboard takes centre stage. Crafted from rafters, it features a cutout with a pocket for a custom canvas artwork that doubles as a subtle light source. Black elements like beading, profiles, and art pieces add a touch of sophistication, completing the modern look of the room.
The bay window provides a lovely view of arches and lush greenery from the balcony, creating a cosy corner for reading books or enjoying a cup of coffee. The TV wall paneling mirrors the design of the headboard rafters, accentuated by a back light that enhances the viewing experience from both the bed and the bay window seat.
In conclusion, this modern contemporary villa stands as a testament to the transformative power of design, where every detail is meticulously curated to create an environment that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is functionally sound. From the soothing hues of the living room to the vibrant energy of the kids’ room, each space tells a story, inviting residents and guests alike to embark on a journey of discovery and delight.
