This Minimalist Modern Interior Design is a Peaceful Retreat | Studio Rohit Jain

The minimalist modern interior design of the house was envisioned as a peaceful retreat from the chaos of the outside world. Clean lines and a restrained colour palette create an uncluttered, serene environment. Being a family of 3, the house was planned, ensuring the left part has a master and kitchen while the other part has more intimate and private spaces.

In interior design, the concept of mushin refers to spaces that embody clarity, simplicity, and mindfulness. Inspired by mushin, or “no mind,” we wanted to create a layout that promotes efficient use of space, encouraging mental stillness, focus, and a sense of presence—free from unnecessary distractions and clutter. Planning this home was a joy of craftsmanship, and attention to detail is incorporated in every space.

Editor’s Note: “The House of Balance by Rohit Jain and Tanushree Kothari is a quiet celebration of minimalist-modern design. Subtle arches, natural light, and a restrained palette define its tranquil atmosphere. Thoughtful use of textures, sustainable materials, and seamless craftsmanship transforms each corner into a harmonious retreat, embodying elegance in every detail.” ~Simran Khare

A Serene Haven

Smooth, curved walls with a reflective polish greet you as you enter, accentuated by an unadorned arched ceiling that gracefully extends over the polished curved walls. Stepping into the minimalist modern interior design of this home is like entering an oasis of calm and nothingness. It is about creating a space that feels free from distraction, where the absence of excessive design elements allows individuals to truly connect with their surroundings and themselves. The floor is clad in light-coloured marble, reflecting the natural light that pours in through strategically placed windows.

A sleek console table sits against one wall, topped with a few curated collectibles. The lighting is subtle yet warm, provided by a contemporary pendant fixture, casting a soft glow that welcomes you in. There’s an understated elegance in the simplicity, where every element is thoughtfully placed to create an inviting first impression.

Step inside, and you’re immediately drawn into a perfect blend of minimalism and aesthetic calm. Dominated by a neutral colour palette, the space feels open and inviting. Large windows with floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains allow natural light to flood the room, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.

A Touch of Whimsy

At the heart of the space, the expansive sectional sofa in soft beige fabric invites you to sink in. It’s adorned with a charming array of throw pillows, balancing earthy browns with a splash of vibrant orange for a cosy yet contemporary feel. A touch of whimsy comes from the bold patterned rug underfoot, creating a stunning contrast with the neutral furniture while tying the room together.

However, one standout feature is the cylindrical column, adorned with a neutral colour palette without overwhelming the modern minimalist interior design aesthetic. Every element is thoughtfully chosen to enhance the room’s modern minimalist elegance. It’s a space where you can unwind without any clutter to distract from the tranquil ambience.

Blend of Modern Transparency

A dining area that blends natural and industrial elements. It has a minimalist vibe with its well-chosen features and balanced palette. One wall is clad in a light, natural wooden finish, offering a warm contrast to the room’s cooler tones. The flooring is a light-coloured, speckled terrazzo, contributing to the overall airy feel. Moreover, the dining table is a glass top supported by cylindrical concrete bases, blending modern transparency with a contemporary touch. The space features a neutral palette of greys, blacks, and natural wood tones, creating a zen-like atmosphere.

The bed, dressed in a greyish-blue textured blanket, exudes comfort, complemented by a warm brown upholstered headboard. Moving further, next to the bed, a chic two-tiered bedside table stands out. Its top tier features a white marble surface, home to a stylish lamp with a pleated shade and some decorative stones. The partition wall behind the bed also combines wooden frames and panels, some adorned with a blue and white patterned fabric, others made of switchable glass. However, the design choice creates a dynamic yet cohesive backdrop.

Space of Character

It’s a minimalist haven with a splash of personality and a whole lot of character. Neat, clean lines frame the headboard, adding a touch of modern elegance. Additionally, it stands tall, making a bold statement without overwhelming the room. It’s like the finishing touch that ties the whole space together. Thus, inviting you to unwind and enjoy your serene space.

Moving further, sunlight streams through a large window enhanced with beige Roman shades, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Positioned near the window, a light green cushioned lounge chair offers a perfect spot for relaxing while soaking in the natural light.

At the centre of the room, a black round coffee table adds a sleek touch. The built-in wooden shelves on the wall offer storage and display space. Thus, showcasing carefully selected decorative items and seamlessly integrating a flat-screen TV for entertainment.

The light wood flooring complements the overall aesthetic, emphasizing the room’s open plan.

Harmonious Blend

However, the design is intriguing in its simplicity, with a clever use of space and a harmonious blend of modern and natural materials. It’s a perfect retreat for those who appreciate understated elegance.

Sleek and Modern

The powder bathroom is all about sleek, modern elegance with a touch of luxe. However, the star of the show is the terrazzo inbuilt basin and countertop paired with an integrated, streamlined faucet. Above the basin, a mirror stretches up to the ceiling. Thus, amplifying the space and adding a touch of glamour. The ceiling is unique with a reflective, metallic finish that brings a hint of opulence and visual intrigue. Moreover, the walls are a mix of smooth, light-coloured surfaces and terrazzo that match the basin, creating a cohesive look. Lighting comes from two round wall sconces with exposed bulbs. Thus, casting a warm glow. It’s a minimalist dream with just the right amount of sophistication and luxury.
