This Mediterranean Cafe is a Bohemian Haven With A European Spirit | Minnie Bhatt Designs
The spirit of a European sojourn served as the wellspring of inspiration starting right from its name. Upon approaching the restaurant, guests encounter a Mariner’s Muse-n-9667 blue arch-shaped entrance set atop a flight of stairs, a typical ‘Santorini-ian’ feature.
Beyond this entrance lies the heart of the café—the bar—anointed as the “soul of the space,” accented with hand-drawn tiles recalling vistas of a picturesque Santorini skyline, conceived by the talented Aranyalay Chinchpure.
The interiors are deeply rooted in tradition and impeccably modern, referencing classic Cycladic styles. Leveraging the challenges posed by low ceiling heights and existing columns, interior designer Minnie Bhatt of Minnie Bhatt Design Studio created fluid indoor and outdoor spaces that transition seamlessly into one another.
“Stucco-finished arched walls were designed to create intimate moments in generous spaces,” Minnie explains. They draw from the seaside vernacular houses that dot the coastline in Santorini.
Departing from the conventional ‘sterile’ white canvas, Minnie has painted both windows and doors a shade of Mariner’s Muse-9667 blue. She crafted an indoor sanctuary with snug corners and soft lighting, setting the perfect stage for relaxed and quieter dining.
Textural interest is created by natural cane and terracotta lights, rope and beechwood furniture, and reed swings. Wood was chosen for dining tables and chairs, with select tables topped with Subway tiles and Terrazzo. The designer upholstered the banquettes with nautical stripes or cheery yellow fabric, while the chairs feature intricate weave backs or patterned upholstery.
The designer transformed the outdoor expanse into a verdant oasis, with tropical greenery in terracotta planters and an emerald canopy enveloping the swing and lounge seating. A wall with varying levels is in an ombre of blue tones going into white, transporting guests to the coastline.
“It was imperative to create different vibes, and I tried for the cafe to metamorphose across the day,” Minnie explains. Bathed in the golden hues of dawn, the café exudes an inviting warmth, shifting into an afternoon of repose and ultimately blossoming into an electric symphony of colours under the starlit sky.
