  • This Home For A Nuclear Family Is Located Within The Green Area Of Bengaluru | Ashwin Architects

The location of this project for a nuclear family is the single most important aspect of the design. Being a corner site and located in a “green” area of the already green Bangalore city, India, the site is juxtaposed next to an apartment complex situated on a hill and thus there are no neighboring buildings on one side but instead covered with an avenue of trees and plantings.

    Designing with Nature

The design premise was to get the maximum advantage of the greenery, light & ventilation gifted to us. As such large openings going up to the roof on the eastern & northern facades makes it airy.

The water bodies on the north and the landscape gives a soothing effect when seated in the living or the dining area.

An open type elevated kitchen overlooks the living while being easily accessed from the dining gives a sense of vastness.

    Designing with the Slope

The sloping nature of the site on one side allowed us to make the maximum use of the site by creating a basement for parking, home theater, office space and a dump room. It also incorporates a tub area for the kids to enjoy some time-out.

    First-Floor Planning

The first floor is dedicated to the master bedroom which is more of a suite room comprising of the bed area, wardrobe area, seating, a small green space and a bathroom while there is also the daughter’s room and a small family space.

    An Experiment with light

The large quantum of light coming into the house allowed us to experiment with dark & copper shades of flooring. A combination of steel and concrete cantilevers the open staircase from the wall, and a 5 mm tile wrap gives the tread the feel of being made from a solid block. The staircase topped with a skylight makes for shadow patterns which move though-out the day along with the sun.

Going up further, a gym & an open landscaped terrace with a barbecue counter completes the house. As a very close-knit family, they regularly host get-togethers and movie nights with their cousins. With the barbecue space also doubling up as a screen and seating, its an ideal gathering space for the evenings.

The clean lines of the house gives a timeless feel and will not age at least for another generation. Small pockets of greenery juxtaposed strategically gives the feel of landscaping when viewed from any part of the house. All in all, an ideal residence for an Indian nuclear family with enough private and public places to met the family’s varied needs.
