  • This Home For A Family Of Four Tells A Story Of The People Who Live There | Design Vault

Essentially two flats fused into one big jodi , this 1,740 sq ft space is home to a family of four. In our endeavor to create meaningful homes that tell the story of the people who live there, we focused on approaching this bare-shell, builder-grade apartment , with a  design sensibility blending modern simplicity with warm, handcrafted influences.

We started with a bare shell- all beams and columns (with two kitchens!!) in inconvenient places, and  a fragmented layout that didn’t quite establish flow. The layout was carved out to ensure a synergy of function, style with plenty of room for grandness and subtle yet expressive details.

    Foyer

The foyer makes a lasting impression from the very get go, with its black-and-grey marble floor pattern, overlooking an arched portal which formally announces the living room! A panelled ceiling with an aqua blue wallpaper sets a colorful tone to this space . Essentially a ‘hard working foyer’ its walls tucks away lots of storage- including a cleaning articles zone, shoe storage etc – behind its fancy paneling . A majestic sliding door hides away the kitchen to the right of the entrance, with a small console (highly ornate) sitting delicately besides it adding a striking feature to this effortlessly functional – transition zone.

Step further in, and one notices the expansive windows of the grand living room, which steep in abundant sunlight, turning the space into a lightbox during the day.

    Mandir

A majestic metal-glass-wood mandir fuses multiple materials to create a very modern casing to an otherwise traditional marble temple inside. Intricate details of Vietnamese white marble with gold inlay, with a  soft stone arch, forms a backdrop to the many deities Idols, which the client has fondly assembled with great reverence.

    Living Room

The living room space – echoes a laidback charm with muted woods, tonal textures and soft architectural lines. Flowy lines and curves appear, but not with enough context. Notice how the otherwise sharp cornered passage now gently curves into the bedroom space.

The TV wall – through its fluid  geometry, brings in a sense of visual softness. The furniture exudes sophistication, with opulent materials and textures rendering a ‘luxurious’ ambience.

    Dining Table

A tucked under dining table has a  ‘peacock embroidered artwork’ overlooking it. This feature artwork literally ‘anchors’ the entire space, presiding with due authority over this otherwise gentle, nuanced clutter free  milieu.

A neat buffet counter in walnut sits adjacent to the dining -an ideal space to house fancy china.

A long winding corridor leads to the rooms on one side. We have used a lined texture to give it the visual identity of an architectural punctuation.

    Guest Room

The guest / multimedia room had a trickier ask: storage everywhere, but not in your face. Apart from the blended -in wardrobes ,extra storages were folded into the architecture-walls/panelling.

    Master Bedroom

Each room for the family of four has its own tone and expression. The master bedroom features a walk in wardrobe, while the room is cocooned in calm – monotone earth shades and textures. Soft curves and indirect lighting creates a very soothing ambience.

    Son’s Bedroom

An exposed -materials thought resonated deeply with the son’s bedroom. Essentially a den with specially orchestrated indirect lights invites a young imagination to spread wide. Storages and study units are carefully planned to hold an array of sports equipment and study materials for his every growing need.

    Daughters Bedroom

In the daughter’s bedroom, a large window floods the space with light. The room has full height wardrobes which are lined with edge niches bursting with books. A peony pink chaise-ottoman serves an ideal curl up and read situation for the avid reader.
