In a city known for its colour and grandeur, this Jaipur holiday home takes a markedly different stance one of restraint, clarity, and calm. Designed as a sanctuary for a young Indian couple based in Hong Kong and their three-year-old daughter, the 2,000 sq ft apartment is conceived as a place to slow down, reconnect, and live gently with light.
This Holiday Home Is A Place To Slow Down And Live Gently | Figure Ground Inc.
Planned as a four-bedroom holiday home that could seamlessly accommodate both everyday family life and frequent entertaining, the brief centered on openness without exposure, and intimacy without enclosure. The design clearly defines formal and informal living areas while maintaining visual continuity, allowing the home to shift effortlessly between social and private modes. The layout places the master suite alongside the daughter’s bedroom to support functional closeness, while it keeps the guest room discreetly independent to ensure privacy for both hosts and visitors.
The design language reflects a Contemporary Classic style with Mediterranean undertones, interpreted through a modern Indian lens. The design uses classical architectural devices—arches, symmetry, and framed vistas—not as stylistic gestures but as spatial tools. Jaipur’s historic architecture subtly informs the project through curves and sequencing, without resorting to ornament or nostalgia.
Light is the central protagonist. Organised as a sequence rather than a collection of rooms, the home is anchored by a central circulation spine that allows daylight to travel deep into the apartment. Arched thresholds choreograph movement, creating moments of pause and anticipation, while custom metal-framed glass partitions maintain visual permeability without compromising zoning.
Materiality remains restrained and tactile. Cast in situ terrazzo flooring in a warm yellow-beige hue grounds the space and introduces gentle movement underfoot, contrasting softly with muted wall tones.
Lightweight masonry arches finished with hand-applied plaster bring softness to transitions, while blackened metal details provide definition and rhythm. Every furniture piece is custom-designed, ensuring a cohesive language of scale, proportion, and material throughout the home.
The colour palette of soft off-whites, warm neutrals, and natural wood allows light and texture to take precedence. Luxury here is quiet, experienced through comfort, continuity, and balance rather than excess.
At its heart, this home is designed as a slow space, one that reveals itself gradually and ages gracefully. For a family accustomed to fast-paced global cities, it becomes a place of grounding and familiarity. Less about making a statement, more about creating a feeling, this Jaipur residence is an understated meditation on light, proportion, and timeless living.
