The villa design, reminiscent of a Portuguese house, evolved as we began working on it. Besides the interior design, we were involved to a large extent in the aesthetic of the exterior of the villa too. Here, adding the custom azulejo tiles and classical columns was a vital input from our side. The exterior has Shahabad stone, laterite stone, plaster, and azulejo tiles to lend a contemporary Portuguese house look. The interiors were designed as per the client’s requirements and we created spaces that were contemporary and eclectic.
Editor’s Note: “This villa in Goa, designed by Minnie Bhatt, juxtaposes the contemporary with Portuguese heritage, showcasing the ageless beauty of azulejo tiles, laterite stone, and classical columns. Interiors are an eclectic mix of hand-painted walls, matti wood rafters, and carefully curated furniture. The four-storey design incorporates coastal and Japandi-style bedrooms, a home theatre, a terrace with an infinity pool, and outdoor spaces.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

The villa has two entrances as it opens to two roads, being a corner property. The main entrance has a balcao seating and a blue ombré wall around the main door, which is a simple wooden slatted door with open wrought iron hinges.
The door leads you to the living room, which has a balcony opening to the view of the sea. The living room and dining area color palette is blue and mustard yellow.
We added matti wood rafters to the sloping roof and enhanced the ceiling with amber chandeliers.
The flooring is a mosaic of white and blue tiles and the furniture is a mix of classical and contemporary. The dining area has a country-style wooden table with striped dining chairs and turquoise hanging lights.
Furthermore, there is a powder room with hand-painted walls and a Venetian mirror in this area, adjacent to a kitchen that is in mustard yellow and pale green with distressed white cabinets.
This leads to a laundry area at the back. The master bedroom is on this level and has an attached balcony with seating for 4. The master bedroom is rustic with matti wood rafters and four poster beds.
There is an accent wall in Shahabad stone boulders against which the dresser and a standalone wardrobe are placed. The color palette of this room is ivory and pastels.
The staircase that connects the four levels of the villa is clad with Shahabad stone treads and an ombré of blue mosaic tiles for the risers. There is also an elevator too that connects all floors.
The floor below this has the family bedrooms, which also have an attached closet room and en-suite bathrooms. This floor also has a family room with a home theatre and a pool table area that overlooks the floor below.
One of the bedrooms has a coastal aesthetic and is in pale blue with custom-made furniture and a distressed wooden tile floor in a chevron pattern.
The other bedroom is woody and japandi in style, with a log wood headboard, and is in ivory and beige. Here, it has a niche bookshelf and an organic-shaped mirror.
Moreover, it has wardrobes with woven cane shutters set in a wooden frame, a beige and green bathroom with stone basins, and a log wood counter.
The home theatre room has sliding doors opening to the pool table area on one side and a small patio on the other side.
Furthermore, the patio wall has an azulejo tiled water feature with a marble urn below and a backdrop of laterite stone.
The lower floor has the guest bedrooms. Moreover, they have been designed with cane headboards, built-in wardrobes with slatted white oak wood shutters, and attached bathrooms in tiles and lime plaster.
Moreover, the guest room opens to a small patio with a pergola, a four-poster brass finish bed, and a hand-painted artwork of flowers on the wall behind.
Also, the terrace is on the top level, which has an infinity pool, two organic-style washrooms, and a seating area covered by pergolas.
