This Flat in Mumbai Blends Functionality with Aesthetic Purity | SP Makharia & Associates
The living room is an open, airy space defined by its clean lines and neutral colour palette. Large windows allow natural light to flood the area, highlighting the understated beauty of the materials used. A modular sofa, upholstered in tan fabric, is complemented by neutral furniture pieces and a low-profile coffee table with a tile top.
A striking feature in this flat in Mumbai is the central wall panel, dividing the living and dining areas, that extends seamlessly into the passage. This panel, crafted in MDF and finished in PU, serves as both a visual anchor and a functional element, creating a cohesive flow between the living space and the rest of the house.
Dining is centred around an elegant table crafted from natural wood with a tile top. The chairs, reflecting mid-century modern design, provide comfort and style. The focal point of this space is a piece of customised artwork tailored specifically for the area, adding a unique personal touch. A strategically placed mirror doubles the visual space, enhancing the light.
The kitchen exemplifies efficiency and style with its sleek, handle-less cabinetry and integrated appliances. The use of oak and olive-green finishes contrasts beautifully with the beige countertop. Open shelving offers both practicality and an opportunity to display a curated selection of minimalist kitchenware, reinforcing the room’s uncluttered aesthetic.
The master bedroom is adorned in calming tones of grey and beige with highlights in blue. The walls are a combination of tile and PU, with a flushed toilet door seamlessly integrated into the PU panel. This not only maintains the room’s clean lines but also provides an unobtrusive entry to the ensuite bathroom.
Adding to the room’s charm is a compact yet elegant workspace without compromising the room’s minimalist design. Accessorising the space with blue bedding and chairs will tie the space together and add a touch of vibrancy.
The father’s bedroom is a blend of old-world charm and modern functionality, featuring sage green walls with elegant mouldings that add a touch of classic sophistication. A dedicated mandir stands gracefully in one corner, accompanied by a planter that brings nature into the room. It is designed with intricate detailing, reflecting a blend of tradition and minimalism.
Moving further, a sofa cum bed offers versatility, serving as a comfortable seating area by day and a cosy bed by night. A small study area, thoughtfully placed adjacent to the bed, is equipped with a modest desk and chair, ideal for reading books or engaging in light work. Moreover, large windows with an attached balcony offer a serene view.
We designed the kid’s bedroom with style in mind, creating a harmonious living space for the brother and sister. Thus, the room features a platform bed with separate mattresses, ensuring each child has their own comfortable sleeping area. Additionally, the headboard in striking wine red adds a bold splash of colour with customised artwork in black, white, and gold.
We finish the walls with texture paint, using a colour palette of dark wood, wine red, matte black, and grey. This combination is gender-neutral and aesthetically pleasing. Moreover, we thoughtfully placed the study area in one corner, featuring a compact desk with a black glass profile shutter above it. The room boasts a large attached balcony. Thus offering a breathtaking view of the city. Additionally, the outdoor space is perfect for the children’s pet cat to explore and enjoy.
This minimalist interior-designed house is a testament to the beauty of simplicity. Thus, by prioritising practicality and employing a restrained colour palette, this design achieves a timeless elegance that promotes a peaceful, simple lifestyle.
