This Flat in Kolkata Blends Plush Luxury With Contemporary Elegance | SR Design Aesthetic

Plush luxury meets contemporary elegance in this 4-BHK flat in Kolkata, where sleek and defined silhouettes weave through luxurious materials and curated accents. The refined yet inviting atmosphere that the father-daughter duo of Shukdeo and Kajol Rana of SR Design Aesthetic craft here directly reflects the homeowner’s desire for this residential project in Rare Earth, Kolkata balancing functionality with sophistication.

The homeowner’s ties with the founder and principal designer of the firm, Shukdeo Rana, were established almost 20 years ago. It was when SR Design Aesthetic curated his office. Years later, upon the purchase of his new Flat in Kolkata, he reached out again for their expertise. This time, a seamless blend of Shukdeo’s technical expertise and a design style primarily conceptualised by Shukdeo’s daughter, Kajol, With the homeowner’s established business in kids’ garments, it became clear to the designers that fabric would play a pivotal role in the design of this space—and indeed, this concept is what comes to the fore to overlay a layer of plush luxe appeal in the space.

Editor’s Note:” This Kolkata flat whispers tales of effortless luxury from the very threshold, where an open, flowing layout greets you. A symphony of neutral hues, plush furnishings, and champagne accents bathes the space in opulence. Bold, quirky artworks punctuate the decor, adding allure, while multifunctional furniture elevates the abode’s practicality.” ~Simran Khare

A Luxurious Charm

Spread across 1,850 square feet, the flat in Kolkata oozes effortless, luxurious charm right from the entrance. A free-flowing and open layout governs the shared spaces. One that is achieved after demolishing the original, constraining walls to manifest a more cohesive look.

Thus, an expansive living and dining zone takes shape, setting the opulent tone for the design. Here, a neutral palette assumes centre stage. Moreover, with quirky accents of turquoise furnishing and red artwork adding a pop of vibrant colour and linear accents of gold echoing the concept of pared-back luxury.

A marble backdrop for the TV panel and the white and champagne tones of the decor juxtapose against the wooden panelling spanning the length of the living and dining areas. Meanwhile, bold artwork adds quirky flair to this flat in Kolkata. Bathed in natural light that filters in through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the home reconnects with nature’s elements as well.

Spatial Configuration

With the spatial configuration prioritising seamless flow and comfort, Kajol ensures the functionality of the space is impeccable. Additionally, she paid nuanced attention to detail and emphasised precision across the design. As a designer who recently completed her masters of interior design in Florence, Italy, she notes, “This is my first design project—one where I was reacquainted with the challenges of designing for a typical Indian household by including a lot of storage and prioritising utmost functionality.”

The designers optimise every nook and cranny in the space through multifunctional design elements. They incorporate furnishings, like a pull-out iron table camouflaged within the dining console. Hidden doors, such as the son’s bedroom door concealed in the accent wood-panelled, add to the ingenuity. Storage units tucked away under the TV console further enhance the design’s efficiency.

Natural stones in the families of marbles, real wood, and natural and engineered veneers; luxurious fabrics that hark back to the homeowner’s profession; textural paints that add a dimension of natural tactility; and bright artworks that curate visual interest come together here. The organic and abstract patterns that govern this artwork find repetition in the geometry of the rug and the fabric of the dining room chairs.

All the furniture found in the home—excluding the sofa, coffee table, dining chair, and table—is custom-made in SRDA’s factory. “We definitely prioritised the clients’ need for simplicity and functionality, but only after ensuring it goes hand-in-hand with the overall luxurious ambiance of the home,” Kajol elaborates.

Old World Charm

In the dining zone, a composition of beiges steals the show, while bringing in an old-world charm with intricate chandeliers. The accent of gold emphasize the warm undertones of the beige, enveloping the space in cozy yet classy vibes.

Kitchen

The linear kitchen, while functional to the tee with all the modern conveniences one can expect, demonstrates a design flair with the incorporation of deep navy tones against the grey cabinets and Caesar stone as a backsplash.

The Son’s Bedroom

As one ventures further into the home, the shared spaces make way to private zones, each oozing plush delight. Personalized to suit a spectrum of personalities, the colour palettes of the four bedrooms are one-of-a-kind, each inspired by a member of the family.

The son’s bedroom dons a timeless palette, in step with his evolving tastes as he grows older and steps into adulthood.

Gold accents underscore the grey-veined marble textures of the accent wall. Meanwhile, a pared-back language of clean lines and simple sophistication makes itself apparent.

Daughter’s Bedroom

Meanwhile, the daughter’s bedroom is adorned with a bright turquoise hue—her favourite shade complemented by juxtaposing peach shades.

Thoughtful details such as the tufted curtains echo this colour scheme, and a fabric-panelled headboard stretches to the ceiling to create an illusion of expansive space. Thus, adding both—an element of quirk with it’s curved geometry and a dash of plush luxurious appeal.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom embodies classic luxury with gleaming marble accent walls and polished natural veneer statement surfaces.

A cozy sit-out incorporated within this space allows multiple uses here, creating a perfect nook for unwinding.

Beautiful mouldings on the wall hark back to the grace of a bygone era, while a bold painting of traditional and historical flair adorns the wall, a callback to the homeowner’s inclination for traditionality even in contemporary settings.

Parents’ Bedroom

Beautiful mouldings on the wall hark back to the grace of a bygone era, while a bold painting of traditional and historical flair adorns the wall, a callback to the homeowner’s inclination for traditionality even in contemporary settings.

But through this individuality, a certain warmth and sophistication remain constant, tethering the design vocabulary across different zones with echoes of rich, jewel-like tones, soft neutrals, and sleek metallic accents. “My favourite element of this design remains the beautiful blend of functionality and aesthetic it offers. The motive of utilising every inch of the space keeping a Marwadi family’s needs and requirement for a large amount of storage in mind, all while not compromising on the ambiance and design vocabulary of the residence,” says Kajol.

Keeping a cohesive thread of contemporary opulence running throughout the design with plush finishes, rich hues, and sleek, metallic accents, Kajol’s design style and Shukdeo’s technical skills transform this Kolkata home into a haven of ultimate sophistication.
