Interior Designer Prachi Jain dives into the untapped beauty of the aquatic world and infuses a soft elegance. Like the exquisite wonders of the undersea world, this apartment thrives in various elements. A multitude of moods, marine colors, dappled sunlight, and an all-encompassing canvas of water blend seamlessly wherever you look.
The clients were no strangers to Prachi’s work, and when they bought a home of theirs, she was naturally the one approached to do the interior. The design tailors to clients’ needs and proposes an unconventional yet beautiful approach. She proposed a seamless design where walls and ceiling share the same even tone, avoiding any contrasting paint or texture. It suggests water is transparent, flowing, and moving. This was crucial as the interior remains uniquely mesmerizing throughout the day, with sunlight casting captivating reflections on the walls.
Editor’s Note: “Into ‘The Ocean Abode,’ reflecting the calmness of the marine, this Pune flat is simple yet soft and elegant. The cohesive design, whereby the walls and ceiling share an identical tone, implies the fluidity of water, providing a fascinating appearance as daylight flows into the setting. Each detail, from the mottled textures to the distinctive, quirky elements that lend character. Every room delivers a mystical experience, with notable design details adding to the home’s beauty and elegance.” ~Baarat Krishna

The mottled texture painstakingly given to all these surfaces was not easy to achieve, given the fact that it could have ended up looking dull or lackluster; on the contrary, it adds a character impossible to emulate. The team achieved this look through close collaboration with the paint team, and it consistently impresses people. Unsurprisingly, Prachi, who led the effort, is inundated with questions about the dos and don’ts of this finish. In an undersea world, big and small fish, varied textures, and both familiar and mysterious elements create a diverse scene.
The myriad colors, enhanced by the elements’ proximity to the surface, create a deeply private and enigmatic world for visitors. The design ensures that each room offers a unique, immersive experience. There are surprises at every corner. For example, the wooden vintage lamp, mosquito repellent potted plant, and sleeper wood unit each add unique character to the space. These quirky elements, like the jagged edge bed backdrop, require a discerning eye to fully appreciate their thoughtful placement.
Easily the most interesting space in this Pune flat, the living room has an entire wall of light flooding it; it allows the designer to infuse many different moods and textures here, playing them out perfectly according to the time of day. The furniture is low, has a very sensible reason; the height of the apartment is barely 9 feet, so proportions are important.
The striped single dumpy chair makes a really compatible companion to the ‘pup’ furry bounceon sofa. One can imagine lovely soirees here as much as a delightful summer afternoon with lemonade! The carpet was specially made to order. The slatted doors open in a very innovative manner, to the Pooja Room. The television unit is made from sleeper wood retaining its imperfections and texture.
Open dining room with just the minimum of furniture; the chairs are very chic European and so is the table. A niche created for the refrigerator nicely fits close to the dining and kitchen both. Again, a sleeper wood unit for the dining. One must make special mention of a particular intriguing art work created by the artist for this wall. It is a D shaped elaborate pattern that sits asymmetrically with the storage unit. One is strongly reminded of an oyster somewhere deep in the ocean!
The kitchen is neat and cosy. Some improvisation is there in the form of a ledge, which makes it easy to reach for condiments. Some warmth in form of wicker baskets neatly tucked away where it is easy to operate from, and good light quality enhancing the sea green pearl finish of the trolley fronts.
Does the master bedroom appear extremely simple? Well, yes and no; it is simple in plan but look under the surface and you see the little touches of brilliance.
The bed back, while elaborate and artistic, allows the wall to continue in the same seamless pattern with even the wardrobe choosing to blend in. A vintage pedestal lamp is a surprise element especially when it casts its pool of light.
Like the salon of a diva, this room makes a statement. Prachi jokingly adds, “This room, which is not very big, is now the most talked about part of this house.”
We are not surprised; its distinct Parisian touches, right from the floral wallpaper to the writing desk. The perfect co-ordination helps in bringing that essence of class
The teenage son is at an age where the world is his; in an oblique reference to this, the bed back has a jagged edge in marble with backlighting. Two artworks add a touch of bravado too.
The art motif behind the little bookcase, the elegance of the dark sea green tv unit and the artistic quality of the entire wall behind the bed is a study in detailing. Every space needs to come alive with the help of light, love and care, and appreciation of its nuances; this Pune flat fulfills all that and more, in every way!
