The AuraNest home is a stunning example of how modern design and neoclassicism architecture can seamlessly fuse with traditional elements to create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound. The project was undertaken by Trupti, the principal designer and founder of ThoughtProcess Design Studio, for a couple in Mumbai planning to live with their ageing parents. The challenge was to create a space that adhered to the ancient Indian architectural principles of Vaastu Shastra while incorporating modern, neoclassicism architecture design elements that also addressed the specific needs of the family, particularly for their 85-year-old family member.
Editor’s Note: “This Mumbai residence showcases a Neo-Classical design that harmoniously blends Vastu Shastra principles with contemporary living. The vibrant selection of materials and textures, coupled with thoughtful space planning, creates an inviting atmosphere that reflects individuality. Adorned with floral and traditional Indian motifs, the interiors become a canvas of artistic expression and functional elegance.” ~Simran Khare

At the heart of the design was a focus on balancing tradition and functionality. To make the home more accessible for the elderly family member, thoughtful choices like vibrant, highly visible colours were incorporated.
For example, the elderly family member’s favourite colour, electric blue, was used in the wardrobe to ensure it was easily identifiable. The use of colours and textures throughout the home created a vibrant and visually cohesive space while aligning with Vaastu’s principles, which emphasize harmonious spatial energy.
The layout of the house was another crucial design element. A narrow passage opens up into a bright and airy living space, with clever solutions like the multipurpose guest bedroom that becomes part of the living room when its sliding doors are open.
A wall-mounted bed allows the space to transform from a guest bedroom into additional living space when not in use, reflecting a modern approach to space optimization.
Natural materials and finishes like wood and marble were integral in giving the home a warm and earthy feel, particularly the arched veneer ceiling and marble mouldings around the TV.
These materials not only lend a sense of classical elegance but also ensure durability, making the home both timeless and contemporary.
The carefully crafted mandir area accentuates the home’s spiritual and cultural essence, showcasing a hand-painted Vithu Mauli painting. This adds a deeply personal and spiritual dimension to the design while maintaining its Indian roots. The balance of vibrant colours, classical furniture, and spiritual motifs creates a diverse but cohesive aesthetic.
Ultimately, the AuraNest project is a successful marriage of form and function, blending modern needs with traditional values.
It demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance the functionality of a space while adhering to cultural and spiritual beliefs, all without compromising on beauty or elegance.
