Editor’s Note: In a plush culmination of traditional design elements and materials driven by modernity, this penthouse focuses its aperture on having different dialects to spaces without missing out on the common denominator that binds the concept. The dark color scheme accentuates and defines the design ideology through myriad mediums and inserts. ~ Nishal Sevak(Co-Editor)

The penthouse, located on the 11th floor, is accessed through a huge wooden relief door with a layer of grill door in similar flower petal cut out thus detaching the home, a sanctum of tranquility, from the hustle bustle of the city.
The foyer is followed by a passage starting with a void created using dark mirrors as a reflection to self as you enter the house, followed by a modern set of credenza in black finish, with customized fluted wooden panel in the background to greet and relieve the residents of their daily bags and keys. The passage leads to an intersection which leads to formal living space on one side and dining on the other.
Considering the socially active nature of the client, the drawing room is designed around a conversation. A huge set of coffee table set, surrounded by comfortable sofas and arm chairs, is highlighted by a modern chandelier in golden finish.
The formal living is connected to an outdoor terrace on one side and visually separated from the dining space by an intricately designed brass & wood jaali. The dining table is a modern take on Indian communal dining space, accommodating 10 people and overflowing into informal seating as well. The dining table, a black imported marble top supported only centrally via twisted golden metal columns is a statement of luxury.
Connected to the dining space via a huge opening is a big kitchen, serenated in all black. The black granite counter top is paired with black back painted glass shutters and panels; with slight wooden accents, give a dominant look to the space, considering this space is the heart of this family.
The adjacent pooja space is predominantly white with inlay of gold in the back drop of the idol. Emblems of the client’s faith were chosen as preferred design for inlay to visually amass scale in otherwise small space.
The Master bedroom, as a part of brief from client, is designed predominantly in black & dark grey with rose gold accents. The back panel of the bed, colored using dark grey paint with copper powder to add a subtle shimmer, also conceals a hidden entry to the dressing and toilet.
In contrast to the modern palette of master bedroom, the parents’ bedroom is a take on colonial era luxury that the aged have aspired and appreciated. The Georgian era inspired mouldings that composed panels within the walls, added with the regal beige tone of interior, contrasted with earthy red art work on wall; all blend into a harmony seeped in regality.
One of the children bedroom, accommodating an early teen, is an in your face representative of all things comics. The hand painted superheroes collage, coupled with bright colors of décor and a display unit housing a collection of toy nerf guns and figurines to envy completes the fantasy of the kid, inside everyone.
On the other hand, the children room nesting a young adult is a composition of wood and grey with a hint of colors added by art and tapestry.
The next bedroom is a contemporary take colors in décor with shades of peach blended with egg shell off white, paired with wooden textures. The fluting in panels in pelmet differentiate the ceiling from bed back wall enveloped with upholstered fabric panel and wooden sheets, thus scaling up the room visually.
The family room, that doubles us as a home theatre, has a plush sofa seating to sink within, while supplemented with an bar counter to quench your desires while enjoying a movie or family card game night. The elegantly designed shelves, in brass perforated sheet and dark mirrors, display and accommodate the knick knacks as well as add character to the space.
The terrace, accessed through formal living, is a social spill out spaces designed with a bar counter, a small green space and a stone seating around a fixed stone platform encasing bon fire pit. All this is surrounded with plantation along the periphery. The Material palette of this outdoor space is a rustic earthy tone made of exposed brick, cuddapah stone and kota cobble flooring; a stark contrast to the one inside, to resemble an escape into lap of nature.
The modern meets luxury was has been the underlying tone of the project, thus satisfying the homely opulence, which was part of the brief.
