The brief for this 3-bedroom Mumbai home was deceptively clear: create a space that feels unmistakably Indian without turning it into a period installation. The young family had a genuine and lived connection to their Maharashtrian heritage, but they did not want a pastiche. They wanted spaces that could accommodate antique jharokhas and hand-carved objects while functioning effortlessly as a home for everyday life. This tension between rootedness and utility became the central design challenge.

Modern Ethnic

The architects addressed this challenge through a concept they called Modern Ethnic. They expressed the ethnic sensibility through materials, motifs, and memories woven into the home. Walnut joinery, lathe-turned legs, a paisley headboard, and a carved lotus composition in the puja alcove bring this character to life. They introduced modernity through spatial logic and functional planning. Practical storage, purposeful lighting, and proportions suited to the family’s everyday life keep the home contemporary and easy to live in. The two approaches do not compete. Instead, they work together to create a home that feels rooted, contemporary, and deeply personal.

THE COLOUR THREAD OF 3-BEDROOM

What holds the 3-bedroom apartment together across four rooms is a deliberate and restrained colour strategy. Dark teak is the structural constant — running through every archway, furniture leg, and piece of joinery. But the thread that travels from room to room is a deep, terracotta-adjacent red: visible in the lacquer detailing on the dining table legs, in the TV unit, in the hues of the sofa upholstery print, in the hand-carved wall medallions in the living room, in the paisley of the master bedroom headboard fabric, and the colour of the knobs of the wardrobe in the kid’s bedroom. It never announces itself. It simply recurs — and that recurrence is what makes the house read as one considered whole rather than a collection of separately resolved rooms.

THE LIVING ROOM

The living room of 3-bedroom establishes the palette and the spatial register for everything that follows. Custom wood-framed sofas in sage green carry a palm-print fabric on the back cushions, pulled from the vocabulary of Indian botanical illustration. An antique glass with brass detailed pendant, a Persian rug, and a horizontal teak moulding along the wall — this moulding reappears in every room and is one of the quieter decisions that does the most connective work. The hand-carved terracotta wall medallions are arranged to read as collected over time, not installed as a set. That distinction matters.

THE DINING AND PUJA SPACE

The dining and puja zone is framed by a teak arch and is the most formally resolved space in the project. A round dining table on sculpted lathe-turned column legs — the turnings finished in lacquer red — sits at its centre, with magenta upholstered chairs that hold their own without overpowering the room.

The puja alcove composed as a structured tableau, arranging carved lotus wall pieces with brass details at varying heights. A brass Buddha anchors the altar, while arched fluted glass drawers sit below. The ethnic detailing feels rich yet organised, as each element serves a clear visual role without overwhelming the space.

THE MASTER BEDROOM

The designers installed three inherited antique jharokhas, carved Rajasthani window frames, as a triptych above the bed. They anchor the room’s identity without dominating its atmosphere. The headboard features rich paisley upholstery, while a fluted wood dado frames it above. The pattern adds character to the room without competing with the jharokhas above.

A brass wall sconce, cream bedding, deep burgundy cushions: each element is doing a specific and considered job. The room is warm, ethnic in feeling, and completely functional as a daily space — which is precisely where the brief asked us to land.

THE KID’S ROOM

The kid’s room holds a large-format illustrated park-scene wallpaper — hand-drawn in character, specific in its details — against a curved dusty rose velvet headboard.

The wardrobe door knobs with the shading hue carry the project’s red thread, connecting the room visually to the rest of the apartment. It is the most visually light space in the home. The ethnic DNA is present but worn lightly here, as it should be.

LIVED

Across the 3-bedroom apartment project, the ethnic prints in the bedding, the architectural detailing, and the craft objects are not designed to be noticed individually. They are designed to recede into their rooms and make those rooms feel fuller, softer, and more inhabited. The space is soft, homey, and Indian — and it functions without asking anything of the people living in it. That, in the end, is the only measure of a resolved interior: not whether it photographs well, but whether it holds up when the furniture is sat on and the day has begun.
