Editor’s Note: Transporting us to the 90s, this loft is designed with all things industrial and unpolished textures. With an undimmable charm to it, the exposed bricks are the center of the limelight that leads the mood of the residence. The hints of rustic in vintage furniture and unsmoothed faces of light pendants are indeed a designer’s touch. The Auburn Studio has boldly unveiled that sometimes unfinished surfaces can do wonders. ~ Nishal Sevak(Co-Editor)
Creating a dream home is a deeply personal journey, where every element comes together to reflect the unique vision and personality of the homeowners. In the case of a young couple with a penchant for loft-style living, the challenge was to infuse Indian accents and touches to add warmth and cosiness to their industrial-inspired abode. The result? loft no.16: the perfect blend of styles and warmth. An eclectic and inviting space that seamlessly blends loft aesthetics with traditional Indian elements.

The spatial configuration of the apartment played a crucial role in achieving the desired loft-style ambiance. The original layout proposed by the builders was modified to create an open and spacious feel. Upon entering, a small foyer leads to a light-filled living and dining room, with the balcony bringing in an abundance of natural light. The dining area seamlessly connects to a semi-open kitchen, allowing for easy interaction and entertaining. To cater to the needs of the young parents, the 3-bedroom apartment was reimagined to have two bedrooms – one for the parents and one for their 7-year-old son. The third bedroom was transformed into a den, providing the perfect space for the client to unwind and enjoy leisure activities.
The foyer is the gateway to a home, setting the tone for what lies beyond. In the case of this industrial loft-inspired apartment with Indian accents and touches, the foyer serves as a sneak peek into the unique theme of the entire house. As you step through the louvred partition doors, you are greeted by a sight of a wooden carved painting, illuminated by an industrial lamp hanging above it. This combination immediately captures the essence of the apartment’s design.
Mirrors are a perfect addition to the foyer as they create an illusion of space and reflect light, making the area appear brighter and more open. The antique mirror finish cladding creates a stylish and seamless transition from the foyer to the rest of the house while also serving a functional purpose of concealing the electrical panel that lies behind it. Placing a mirror strategically can also serve as a final check before leaving the house.
The colour palette of the living room is rooted in earthy tones, with shades of brown, beige, and grey dominating the space. This neutral backdrop provides the perfect canvas for pops of colours to shine through. Custom-made artworks, featuring vibrant hues and intricate designs, add a lively touch to the room, creating a focal point that draws the eye and sparks conversation.
Adding a touch of rustic elegance, the living room features wooden rafters on the ceiling. These natural elements bring warmth and texture to the space, complementing the industrial loft design.
Injecting a bold and refreshing element into the space, blue accent chairs take centre stage in the living room. These eye-catching pieces of furniture not only provide comfortable seating but also serve as statement pieces that anchor the overall design.
The circular concrete table takes centre stage, commanding attention with its unique design and artistry. Designed with shades of grey and streaks of blue, the dining table top resembles a piece of abstract art, adding a touch of sophistication to the space. The irregular dents on the base of the table embrace the raw, unfinished look, perfectly marrying industrial chic with artistic elegance.
In addition to the stunning dining table and chairs, the overall ambiance of the dining room plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. We have carefully curated the space, incorporating elements that reflect the vibrant personality and lifestyle of the owners.
Traditional artefacts, tribal paintings, have been handpicked from different regions, adding a touch of individuality to the dining room. Sheer linen curtains allow natural light to filter in, creating a soft and inviting ambiance.
For the kitchen cabinets, we went with oak veneer for achieving the desired blue hue. The oak veneer can be dyed blue, creating a unique and eye-catching look. The natural grain of the wood adds warmth and texture to the overall design. To enhance the light and spacious feel of the kitchen, we opted for top cabinets with fluted glass and black frames. This combination allows light to pass through while adding a touch of sophistication.
While the industrial loft aesthetic sets the foundation for the master bedroom, it is the infusion of Indian accents and touches that truly elevates the space to a whole new level. By incorporating elements inspired by Indian culture, like the patterned flooring from Bharat flooring, the room becomes a unique blend of modern and traditional design.
The custom-made wooden bed becomes the centre piece of the master bedroom. Crafted with precision and attention to detail, this bed combines traditional Indian craftsmanship with a modern design aesthetic. Its rich wood tones and rattan detail add warmth and character to the room.
For their 7 year old son’s bedroom, we went with a custom-made wooden bunk bed. This not only provides a functional sleeping arrangement but also adds a touch of natural warmth to the room. We opted for a sturdy and durable design that can withstand the rough and tumble of active kids.
Apart from being a personal sanctuary for the homeowner, the leisure room also serves as a space for entertainment. Adorned with plush furnishings and soft textures the room can transform into a mini home bar.
One of the unique aspects of the leisure room is its purpose as a space for the homeowner to indulge in his favourite hobby: playing the piano. With a passion for music, the homeowner wanted a dedicated area where he could unwind and create beautiful melodies. The room is carefully arranged to accommodate a grand piano, positioned to take full advantage of the natural light streaming in from the large windows.
