Is Welding a Safe Hobby?

Using high levels of heat and pressure to join two or more pieces of metal—what could possibly go wrong? Welding is an important trade that’s essential for many different industries and types of construction projects. While welding can be a very rewarding career, many people also take it up as a hobby. All you need is an understanding of the craft, some experience, and the right welding supplies and safety equipment, and you can begin creating your own amazing welding creations.

But for the first-time welder, you may be a bit unsure about the safety of this process. Am I really capable of engaging with this process in a safe and effective manner? Here, we’re taking a closer look into the world of welding and helping to answer many of the top questions about this trade. Not only do we review key details about the welding process, but we also help to assess whether or not welding is safe as a hobby for a beginner.

What is Welding?

Before we dive into the safety concerns, let’s take a step back and start with the basics. What exactly is welding? For pros and amateurs alike, welding is a fabrication process where two or more base pieces of metal are fused together via a process involving high levels of heat and pressure. The heat and pressure forms what is known as a “join” that is between the metal pieces as the parent materials cool. While welding is mostly performed on metals and also thermoplastics, welding can also be performed on wood. When the welding joint is completed, this is then called a weldment.

The parts that are joined are referred to as the “parent material.” Material is then added to help form the joint. This additional material is usually a type of pipe, filler wire, or it can even be a consumable electrode (common in arc welding). This is all referred to as the “filler” or the “consumable.”

How Does the Welding Process Work?

Now that we know what is welding? is, it’s time to take a closer look at the actual process behind this trade. Welding is a specialized  and precise process that involves high levels of heat and lots of pressure to melt a material, known as the parent material. Then, following this step, a filler is used to complete the joining process between both materials.

When heat is applied at such a high temperature (usually around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit—similar to the temperature of the surface of the sun), this causes a weld pool that forms a join during the cooling process. This new join is often stronger than the original parent material. Pressure also plays an important role in the process and it all comes down to the type of welding work you’re doing.

Is Welding a Safe Hobby?

On the outlook, it may seem like welding is rather intense, and potentially dangerous, for someone to just pick up as a hobby. But countless individuals of all skill sets and backgrounds have taken up welding as a fun and enjoyable—and yes, safe—hobby. Welding can be a perfectly safe activity as long as you take the necessary safety precautions, use the right tools and safety gear, and have enough experience and knowledge to get the job done right.

If you’re just starting out, it’s recommended that you learn from a mentor. This could be a professional welder or even just a friend or family member with some welding experience. There are also a ton of online resources that can provide you with background knowledge before diving into your first weld.

Top Safety Concerns for Welders

While welding is a safe hobby, there are still many top safety concerns you should always keep in mind for every weld. Failing to follow safety protocols or use the right welding equipment and welding gear can quickly ruin your weld, the materials, and even lead to injury. Even the most experienced welders need to keep safety as a top priority.

Some of the top safety concerns for welders include:

·                      Electrical shocks: an electrical shock can occur when welders touch two pieces of metal together that have a voltage between them. The most common shock from welding is a secondary voltage shock from an arc welding circuit. Electrical shocks can lead to serious injury or even death in some cases.

·                      Fumes or gases: overexposure to certain welding fumes can be a hazard to your health. Welding fumes contain metal oxide compounds that can be harmful to your health when inhaled. Use a welding helmet and be sure you’re working in a well ventilated area when pursuing a welding project.

·                      Fires or explosions: welding arcs create intense levels of heat that, if unchecked or performed improperly, can easily cause a fire. While the arc itself can reach incredibly high temperatures, this isn’t the real fire hazard. That’s from the heat, sparks, and spatter that’s created by the arc. When welding, be sure to always have a fire extinguisher on hand.

Conclusion – Is Welding a Safe Hobby?

Welding can be an enjoyable hobby for any weekend warrior who has a passion for working with metal and creating. But with any skill or trade, safety needs to always be a top priority—even for the most experienced welders. Try to learn the craft from someone with experience as they can help you avoid a lot of mistakes and help you perfect your craft even more quickly—all while keeping you safer.

Welding is a serious, and enjoyable, trade that should not be undertaken without the appropriate supplies and welding accessories. If you perform a weld without the proper safety precautions and gear, you run the risk of potential injuries, such as electrical shocks, burns, or even explosions. Done safely, however, welding is a safe hobby that can teach you more about metal and other materials and allow you to create truly unique projects and pieces of art.
