  • Duplex Interior Design of SKAI House Creates a Minimal and Cozy Abode | Studio MAT

When clients approached us with SKAI House, their brief was very clear: the clients wanted a minimal and understated abode that is cozy. SKAI is a duplex apartment with an expansive living room a thoughtfully curated duplex interior design. A staircase winds up and leads to a study room on the first floor with 2 other bedrooms.

Editor’s Note: “SKAI house unfolds in calm elegance, where minimalism is a choice rather than an absence. As sunlight filters through the archways, it imprints warm hues on stone, wood, and each detail of comfort. Every interior element, from sculptural work to curated objects, whispers a gentle rhythm of art and the feeling of home.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

    Design and Planning

The design and planning intent was to create multiple conversational spots of different natures. Clients love hosting their friends and family at home. These spaces allow for various gathering and conversational spots in the house.

    Foyer

The foyer leads you to a massive living room. It has been planned out in a way that it has formal seating and informal seating with a bench facing a swing. It has an island sofa that faces both the formal and informal seating area.

    Living Room

The living room is very guest-friendly. The dining opens out an arch window into the kitchen that makes a very appealing visual connect. SKAI has a minimal design approach with understated sophistication.

In the lower floor, the living room the stone wall is paired with lovely ash wood. The living area is neutral with pops of color in the rug, art works and furniture pieces.

The living room has been opened up so that both windows pour in ample amount of natural light into the living area which makes the living room look quite breezy as a person enters the area.

    Kitchen

The kitchen and the living room are connected by a little arch window. This connection makes the kitchen interact with the living space in a unique way. The kitchen material palette complements the living room with a subtle combination of beige and white along with fluted shutters.

    Master Bedroom

The master bedroom has been planned in a way that the study is tucked between two wardrobes. We have experimented with pairing of charcoal wood veneer with a bright rattan.

This combination gives the room a very vibrant yet earthy feel. The 3D artwork on the wall gives a room an entirely mature and rustic feel.

    Guest Bedroom

The guest bedroom features a sofa cum bed, making the space multipurpose. Ash wood pairs beautifully with fluted glass, while stunning black hardware complements the overall design. The living room staircase leads you to the above floor. The signature wooden railing elevates this staircase. It forms the heart of the house.

    Study Area

On the above floor, there is a study space and two bedrooms. This study embraces a playful approach in both its utility and material selection. It has multiple seating spaces—a low seating space, a study area, and a window seating space along with a bench. However, the intent was to create multiple conversational spaces, as seen here as well. The wallpaper adds a fun element to the space. Furthermore, the vibrant nature of space is amplified using fun shapes, wallpaper, and ash wood.

    Son’s Bedroom

The son’s room has a large study and a built-in wardrobe. The teak wood paired with cane bamboo adds a unique feel to the bedroom.

    Daughter’s Bedroom

The bed, side tables, and artwork complement the shell. Moreover, the daughters’ bedroom has a bright blue rattan paired with teak wood.

Taking a stroll through the SKAI is a relaxation exercise. Delightful little visual surprises reveal themselves in plain sight, while clean lines and warm tones pepper the space. Moreover, it emphasizes minimal forms and a laid-back sense of refinement.
