Zoi is located on the 3rd level in J.D. hi-street mall in Ranchi. It’s a large L-shaped linear space which was previously a bowling alley and gaming zone. When we first saw the space what appealed to us was the possibility of a large open facade throughout the length of the space flooding the space with natural light. The clients wanted to create a brand that had a day and evening vibe.
Editor’s Note: An L-shaped linear space which was previously a bowling alley and gaming zone is now converted to Zoi Restaurant designed by Minnie Bhatt designs. The spaces are connected by structural beams and floating arches and are enhanced by sculptural metal and cane floral art installations.
Designed Within A Linear Space, This Restaurant Replaces A Previous Bowling Alley | Minnie Bhatt Designs
The entire floor is for Zoi so we could create an interesting entrance foyer with sculptural metal and cane floral art installations, which also served as a backdrop for taking photos for guests.
We planned three entrances to the space, two of them serve as entry points for the larger space and one on the side serves as the private area, These are used for a private gathering and for service.
As it was a very linear space, we introduced curved forms by creating low curved walls. They culminate into structural beams and also floating arches connecting spaces. This created an opportunity to have curvilinear sofas and lent a flow to the space.
We opened up the entire left-side facade and put up collapsible glass and metal doors opening to a narrow balcony overlooking treetops.
We planned a dining area in the first zone, then a bar that flowed in a curve uniting the ‘L’ shaped linear space and flowing into the private dining space. The designers also added a stage on one end of the first zone for live performances and guest DJs.
The overall aesthetic is warm, organic, and fluid, with natural finishes like rattan and lime plaster used throughout.
They created a floor with an in-situ finish with terrazzo in three colors divided by brass inlay strips. The decorative lights are all custom-created in fiber, rope, and cane.
The bar is an important feature in the space, with a faux rammed earth apron, a lit onyx top, and a hanging display above with bent cane supports.
The last section is the private zone with organic-shaped niches in the walls with dry leaves enhancing them and a buffet counter set up at the back. The entrance to this zone is visually created with an arch made with customized ‘z’-shaped red bricks.
