At some point, almost every homeowner is looking for creative ways to spruce up their home decor. While there are plenty of ideas you can choose to enhance the appearance of your interior, adding a rug is an excellent option. Implementing the right floor ornament can pull all of your accent colors together, add vibrancy to the room and transform the entire space.
However, just choosing any rug to add to your decor isn’t enough as there are plenty of rug styles available, each suitable for different rooms.
From true designer statement pieces to practical family-friendly picks, the key is to pick the one that will best fit into your interior while serving a functional purpose.
Although there are many ways to decorate your home with a rug, we share four of them to get you started.
The first thing you need to decide when decorating your home with rugs is what kind of aesthetic you are looking for. Whether you want a round, solid block color rug or a rectangular, patterned one made from a special material. Also, you need to think about the room you are planning to decorate, so the rug suits the space as well as the needs of your family.
Depending on your preferences, there are plenty of unique area rugs you can choose that add a finishing touch to any room. For example, wool rugs are a great option for bedroom spaces as they help create a harmonious, relaxing atmosphere.
On the other hand, a patterned rug can be the perfect addition to your living room as it can add vibrancy to the room.
Another thing you need to consider when decorating your home with rugs is the color palette. If your home features neutral colors such as white, black or beige, you can go for a minimalist, patterned rug consisting of all three shades to create harmony in the space.
If you want to be bold, you can opt for a multicolored one instead to break off the monotony in the space. Either way, you can use your rug as a statement piece that will immediately draw attention whenever someone enters the room.
If you choose a colorful rug to decorate your interior with, be sure to not overdo it because you could end up with a jarring or unpleasant effect.
Choosing the right size is also a very important thing to remember when decorating your home with rugs.
In general, the rule of thumb is to subtract 3 feet from the length and width of the room. This will make the space look bigger if the floor is left unfinished at the edges.
When laying a rug under your dining table, it is best to leave at least 24 inches of rug between the edges of the table and the floor. This will allow the chairs’ back legs to remain on the rug even when pulled out from under the table.
Also, if you have narrow walkways in the kitchen and hallway, consider adding a runner rug so you don’t cover the entire floor area. Make sure they are wide enough so they can accommodate both feet on the rug when you walk.
Based on the size of the room and the furniture in it, you will need to place your rug in the right spot. It’s really important to get the balance right so your interior looks well put together.
For example, if you have two sofas in the living room, then your rug needs to be at an equal distance from each sofa. If that’s not possible, then you have probably chosen the wrong rug size for this particular space.
For small rooms, you should place the rug in front of a sofa, so the floor underneath can peek a little. This will make the entire room look lighter and more spacious.
For open-plan spaces, position the rug so it sits under the front legs of both sofas. If the rug is large, then both sofas can sit completely atop the rug.
If you are looking for a way to spruce up your home, then adding a rug to the space is your best option. There are so many rug styles to choose from which will bring life to the room, add a touch of vibrancy and enhance the overall appearance of the interior.
However, in order to get it right, there are a few important rules you need to remember. For more information, refer to our post and follow the tips to help you decorate your home with rugs.
