The beauty of any canvas—be it a block of stone, an empty plot of land or a blank piece of paper—lies in its unlimited potential. It could be the next David, match the genius of Tadao Ando’s meditative spaces, or equal Picasso’s masterful strokes. The magic of potential is limitless. What if that very idea of potential could be channelled into crafting a space? This commercial office interior design explores how design could be used to platform possibilities. Our goal was to strike a balance—to give it the character of a canvas without making it look incomplete. The material palette thus veered into gentle tones and textures that define the space as a stage and not as the protagonist.
Commercial Office Interior Design Becomes A Canvas For Unlimited Potential | Mercury Architects
The definitive elements for Project Boundless thus become the mirrors, glass and varying volumes. The voluminous entrance creates a vantage into the various spaces – the cabins, workstations and the conference room. Flowing lines and textures guide the eye and let spaces blend seamlessly, while points of contrast step back to avoid drawing focus.
The cascading contemporary light fixture slices through the angular lines of the double-height entrance lobby, elevates its plushness, and anchors the lounge chairs and receptionist’s desk within the space. The light-toned wooden flooring lends the space a subtle sense of warmth that is often lacking in stark white office spaces. Laminate layers the bottom half of the walls to protect them from chairs being pushed against the surface, while paint finishes the upper half.
Placing the conference room right next to the receptionist’s desk segregates the public and private areas of the office. The conference room expands upon the language set by the entrance area with a distinct lighting fixture accenting the space and lines lending character to the otherwise monolithic appeal. The entrance foyer also overlooks two cabins which also feature a double-height space and have a similar curve etched into the glass partition as the wall feature at the entrance.
The glass partitions provide noise isolation as well as spatial demarcation while elevating the space with visual openness. The larger cabin also features a light fixture aligning with the overall theme, but with a simpler design that doesn’t draw too much focus, as per the requirements of the client. The glass partition above sitting height creates a sense of space in the two smaller cabins situated near the entrance for internal use.
The open pantry sits centrally, hidden from the visitor’s view, solving the access problem while keeping activity in the space inconspicuous. The under-counter space, finished with white back-painted glass, houses everything from the water purifier to the fridge. Thus, lending the pantry a sleek charm. The workstations maintain a monolithic appeal, giving the two-level volume a spacious feel. Teal-coloured table tops enliven the spaces without creating contrast. The staircase to the upper floor is hidden behind the workstations across the pantry. Additionally, the design utilizes the space under the soffit to store the printer.
The office features a multitude of diverse spaces that accommodate all requirements without coming across as cramped or congested. Moreover, it carries a gentle character of its own. The attained appeal of the space carries what we set forth to achieve: the nature of a canvas—laidback, yet full of potential. It embodies the balance between simplicity and possibility.
