Designing one’s own architecture studio is a deeply personal exercise, one that extends beyond creating a functional workplace to becoming a physical representation of the practice’s philosophy, values and approach towards design. Conceived as the workspace for Devalaya Architects, the studio occupies the upper floor of a shared professional building. This existing condition became an opportunity to create a gradual transition from a shared arrival into a workspace with a distinct architectural identity.
An Architecture Studio That Turns Its Own Philosophy Into Space | Devalaya Architects
Planned within a compact footprint, the studio demonstrates how thoughtful spatial planning can accommodate every essential function of an architectural practice without compromising openness or flexibility. The layout integrates a principal architect’s office, collaborative workstation, discussion area, waiting lounge, material library and an outdoor balcony, each flowing seamlessly into the next to create a cohesive work environment. Rather than relying on multiple enclosed spaces, the design prioritises visual connectivity, allowing every function to remain interconnected while maintaining its own sense of purpose.
The principal architect’s office is enclosed with full-height sliding glass partitions, ensuring privacy for client discussions and focused work without disconnecting it from the rest of the studio. This transparency encourages continuous interaction between the principal architect and the design team, reinforcing the collaborative nature of architectural practice. The office further opens onto a private balcony, allowing natural light and ventilation to become an integral part of the workspace while creating a visual extension beyond the built environment. A curated collection of bespoke architectural relief artworks within the cabin reflects the creative identity of the practice, transforming the workspace into a personal gallery that celebrates architecture through art.
At the heart of the studio lies a custom-designed discussion table, envisioned as more than a meeting space. Designed with an organic form, it serves as the social nucleus of the office where ideas are exchanged, sketches evolve into conversations, and collaborative decision-making becomes a part of the everyday work culture. By encouraging equal participation and informal interaction, the discussion table embodies the belief that architecture is shaped through dialogue rather than hierarchy.
The defining design gesture of the studio is a recurring language of curves that visually stitches together the entire space. A continuous motif runs through the studio’s marble inlay flooring and suspended veneer ceiling feature. This pattern guides movement and connects the different functional areas. The floor and ceiling work together rather than appearing as separate design elements. Their relationship establishes rhythm, continuity, and direction throughout the studio. The same flowing design language extends to the custom POP feature wall, bespoke furniture, and staircase detailing. Together, these elements create a cohesive visual identity across the workspace.
Materiality follows a restrained and timeless palette, allowing architecture rather than decoration to define the experience. Soft neutral tones, textured surfaces, warm veneer finishes and carefully selected natural materials create a calm backdrop that enhances daylight and visually expands the compact interior. The simplicity of the palette also allows the sculptural architectural elements to become focal points without overwhelming the space.
Despite its modest size, the studio is designed to feel generous, efficient and highly adaptable. Every custom-built element supports the studio’s daily operations. Integrated storage and workstation units maximise functionality. The material library and display systems keep resources organised while maintaining visual clarity. Together, these elements create a workspace that balances practicality with architectural expression. The studio demonstrates that quality depends not on scale, but on how people, space, and the design process connect.
More than an office, the studio serves as a living representation of the practice’s design philosophy, a space where continuity, collaboration and thoughtful detailing come together to create an environment that inspires creativity while supporting the everyday rhythm of architectural practice.
