Editor’s Note: Step into an abode where the spaces are stitched together through tactile experiences and airy and spacious inculcations. While the living room has an elemental ceiling to look up to, the bedrooms have a tropical feel through the popping patterned wallpapers adorning the back of the bed. There is something about this home that makes you want to sit back and take it all in. ~ Nishal Sevak
Concept Note
The house had a modest area of 950 sq.ft and required a complete renovation to become a liveable 3 BHK home. The aim was to make the house feel larger and more inviting within the limited space available. Every corner of the house was utilized efficiently, striking a balance between the confined space and the desired openness and utility.
Our top priority was to maintain the house’s original character throughout the renovation process. By combining old and new elements, we achieved a unique blend that honored the past while embracing the present. The integration of original terrazzo chip flooring with modern interiors created a seamless fusion of old and new, reflecting the timeless appeal of the house while accommodating contemporary living. This transformation breathed new life into the house while preserving its cherished history.
Design Process
To create a more spacious, airy, and functional home, we reconfigured the floor plan by strategically removing or relocating walls to establish an open-plan layout that facilitates a seamless flow between different areas.
The layout underwent modifications, including the relocation of the entryway. Existing bedroom walls and the wardrobe were demolished to create an open drawing room that connects to the dining area and lobby.
Additionally, the kitchen was expanded both in length and width to optimize its extension and coverage. The two toilets were expanded by utilizing the dead space inside the shaft, allowing for more spaciousness.
Emphasizing proper circulation and open spaces, we also focused on maximizing natural light by incorporating larger windows. This infusion of natural light not only brightened the interiors but also created a sense of openness and connectivity with the outdoors.
Retaining and Blending the Original Terrazzo Chip Flooring with Modern Interiors: Our primary objective was to preserve the cost-saving benefits of reusing the existing flooring while introducing a fresh, contemporary aesthetic. The aim was to achieve a harmonious balance between the old and the new, ensuring that the modern interiors enhance the beauty and durability of the original flooring.
By reusing the original flooring, we not only reduced costs within a limited budget but also embraced sustainability through repurposing. This approach respected the history and character of the space while infusing it with a modern, updated look.
Smart storage solutions and multifunctional furniture were incorporated to optimize the utility of the limited space, meeting the practical needs of the occupants. To add a modern touch, the design included minimalistic elements that emphasized simplicity, clean lines, and functionality. The use of neutral color palettes, sleek finishes, and uncluttered spaces contributed to a fresh, contemporary ambiance.
When integrating new elements like lighting fixtures, art pieces, and decor, we followed a cohesive approach to maintain harmony between the old and the new. Carefully curated artwork and decorative accents complemented the existing character of the house, adding visual interest.
