In the fast-growing residential pockets of Navi Mumbai, apartments are often designed around practicality alone. This 750-square-foot home in Sanpada, designed by Ar. Nimisha Doshi of ND Design Studio, takes a quieter and more personal approach. Created for Avadut Kadam and his family, the apartment is rooted in spirituality, comfort, and simplicity a home designed not just to look beautiful, but to feel peaceful.

The brief itself shaped the emotional direction of the project. The client, deeply connected to the Warkari tradition of Maharashtra, wanted the home to carry the calmness and silence associated with Vrindavan. He envisioned a space where daily life, meditation, prayer, and family living could naturally coexist. Instead of turning these ideas into something heavily thematic or decorative, the design translates them into atmosphere through light, soft materials, gentle curves, and a sense of visual ease throughout the house.

The apartment opens into a living space that immediately feels warm and welcoming. One of the biggest challenges here was the unusual layout of the room, which did not follow a conventional apartment plan. Rather than forcing a standard arrangement, the design reshaped the functionality of the space completely. Furniture placement, circulation, and visual connections were carefully reconsidered to make the room feel open and effortless despite the compact footprint.

A subtle moulding detail begins near the entrance and continues through the home, quietly guiding movement from one space to another. It is a small gesture, but one that gives the interiors a strong sense of continuity. Curved edges and arched openings soften transitions throughout the apartment, helping the spaces flow naturally instead of feeling boxed in. The palette of the house stays intentionally calm mostly whites, warm wood tones, muted textures, and soft natural fabrics. This simplicity allows daylight to become one of the strongest design elements in the home. Sunlight filters through sheer curtains and spreads gently across the pale surfaces, creating an atmosphere that changes throughout the day. The interiors never feel overly designed or heavy; instead, they feel light, breathable, and deeply lived-in.

At the centre of the living and dining area is a handcrafted mural inspired by Indian classical elements. Framed within a curved detail, it becomes a quiet focal point without overpowering the room. The artwork brings a spiritual softness into the space while still feeling contemporary and minimal. This balance between tradition and modern living continues throughout the home and becomes one of the project’s strongest qualities.

The balcony and terrace play an equally important role in shaping the experience of the apartment. Rather than being treated as leftover outdoor corners, they become spaces of pause and release from the city outside. Soft seating, natural light, and openness make these areas feel calm and meditative, especially during the early morning and evening hours. The architect describes the balcony as one of her favourite parts of the project a space where the atmosphere of the entire home comes together most naturally.

The master bedroom continues the spiritual narrative of the house while also responding to the practical needs of the family. The room combines multiple functions a pooja space, the son’s study area, and a sofa-cum-bed within a compact layout that still feels uncluttered. Instead of separating these activities into rigid zones, the design blends them together through careful planning and material consistency.

The pooja area becomes the emotional heart of the room. Detailed with a running wallpaper and layered textures, it creates a strong sense of depth and calmness without relying on excessive ornamentation. This space reflects the larger design philosophy of the home: spirituality expressed through atmosphere rather than visual drama. The carved detailing, soft lighting, and muted materials make the room feel intimate and grounding.

In contrast to the otherwise earthy and neutral palette of the apartment, the second bedroom introduces a completely different mood. Designed according to the client’s wife’s request, the room moves toward cooler blue tones and a more modern visual language. The shift in colour and texture gives the space its own identity while still connecting subtly with the overall design of the house. This contrast prevents the interiors from becoming too uniform and adds personality to the project.

Materially, the apartment relies on restraint rather than excess. Wood, textured laminates, soft upholstery, ribbed surfaces, and matte finishes create warmth without making the interiors visually busy. Every detail feels carefully edited. Nothing appears unnecessary, and yet the home never feels minimal in a cold or empty way. There is softness everywhere in the curves, in the fabrics, in the filtered light, and in the way one space leads quietly into another.

Designed by Ar. Nimisha Doshi of ND Design Studio, this Sanpada residence shows how compact urban homes can still feel deeply personal and emotionally rich. By bringing together spirituality, modern living, and thoughtful spatial planning, the project creates a home that feels timeless without becoming overly traditional, and contemporary without losing warmth.

Rather than relying on dramatic gestures, the apartment leaves its strongest impression through smaller moments the softness of an archway, the calmness of filtered sunlight, the quiet presence of handcrafted details, and the feeling of moving through a home designed with genuine sensitivity. It is this simplicity and emotional honesty that gives the project its lasting character.
