Eshaan occupies a 40′ × 60′ north-west corner plot and spans 3,500 sq. ft. The duplex accommodates four bedrooms and essential amenities for modern family living. A landscaped courtyard occupies the corner of the house, bringing greenery into the heart of the home. It draws natural light into the interiors, improves ventilation and creates a visual connection with nature throughout the residence.
A Landscaped Courtyard Shapes The Experience Of This Four-Bedroom Home Eshaan | Ashwin Architects
The corner plot allows the residence to feature a distinctive sloping roof that softens the building’s mass. The roof also gives the architecture a strong visual identity. The design combines carefully planned volumes, courtyards, natural light and restrained materials. These elements create a sense of openness while meeting the functional needs of an Indian nuclear family. The front-facing bedroom features a generous balcony that maximises natural light. The layout also maintains privacy while responding to the plot’s corner orientation.
A minimal colour palette is adopted for the front façade, highlighting select architectural elements and enhancing the overall simplicity of the design.
The planning is thoughtfully organised to ensure that every space enjoys views of landscaped courtyards, bringing in ample natural light and creating a strong connection with nature. The interiors follow a simple, timeless palette of black and white, complementing the clean architectural language of the house.
The entrance is conceived as a welcoming transition from the landscape to the built form. An open passage, framed by lush greenery, creates a sense of openness and gently guides one towards the main entrance.
The double-height living space with sloped roof, is a key architectural feature that reflects the language of the facade. Diagonal slit windows in double height, complemented by large windows openings overlooking the internal courtyard, draw abundant natural light into the space while establishing a visual connection with the landscape.
The interplay of black floor tiles and crisp white walls creates a balanced contrast, allowing natural light to shape the ambiance of the interiors. A brown-clad feature wall introduces warmth and texture, softening the stark contrast between the flooring and walls while creating a seamless visual transition between the surfaces.
Moving past the two internal courtyards, a descent of two steps leads into the kitchen and dining area, creating a subtle transition between the living and dining spaces. The brick-tile cladding establishes a visual continuity with the living area, tying the interiors together through a consistent material palette.
The kitchen is designed with a minimalist approach, incorporating only the essential elements for a clean and functional layout. The understated Grey cabinetry blends seamlessly with the walls and flooring, maintaining a cohesive visual language.
The folded-plate staircase, positioned alongside the internal courtyard, transforms vertical circulation into a visual experience, offering uninterrupted views of the landscaped court as one ascends. The interplay of the staircase geometry and the greenery introduces a sense of lightness while reinforcing the connection between architecture and nature.
The staircase leads to a study nook on the first floor, which also functions as an internal balcony overlooking the double-height space below. This creates a visual dialogue between the ground and first floors.
All four bedrooms are designed to maximize natural light through generously sized windows, creating bright, airy, and comfortable spaces. Each bedroom incorporates a partial walk-in wardrobe, thoughtfully planned to maintain spatial openness while ensuring functionality. Minimal furniture allows the architecture to take precedence, preserving a sense of simplicity and visual clarity.
A consistent flooring material runs throughout the house, establishing continuity across the various spaces. Carefully selected accent furniture introduces character and subtle visual interest, enhancing each bedroom without disrupting the restrained material palette and minimalist aesthetic of the interiors.
An open, landscaped terrace with an integrated seating and bar counter completes the home, creating an inviting outdoor retreat for the family. Designed around the clients’ lifestyle, the terrace serves as a space to unwind in the evenings, share a cup of tea, and spend quality time together.
Surrounded by greenery and open to the evening sky, this intimate setting offers a sense of calm away from the bustle of everyday life. More than just an outdoor extension of the house, the terrace becomes a space for meaningful conversations, quiet moments, and everyday inspiration, bringing the home to a fitting close.
