Editor’s Note: ‘Casa Brezza’ does every bit of justice to its name because one can instantly find themselves relaxed entering this apartment. Floating in white, the apartment personifies a soothing breeze that can gently caress and calm a worried mind. The maddening busyness of a city, and the serenity and calmness of the sea can both be experienced at the beachside neighbourhood of Adyar, Chennai. Our latest residential project — Casa Brezza — is set in this pleasant and beautiful environs. A young couple came to us with to design a 3BHK beachside house with plenty of natural light and storage spaces, measuring 1,381 sq.ft. The couple had a lengthy wish list for their new space, but a minimally-designed and highly functional home took precedence.
The detailed tasks included luxurious wardrobe spaces throughout the apartment, and well defined storage areas in the kitchen for ease of maintenance and operation. A large living-dining space roomy enough to entertain guests, dedicated home office areas (two independent ones) for the couple, and an open space for workouts, formed a part of the spatial brief.

Since the client commissioned the project when the building was under construction, we could alter the layout of the apartment to optimize the carpet area. The wall positions were changed to create a free-flowing living-dining space… with the kitchen overlooking them.
The area allotted for the wardrobe in the master bedroom was brought into the main room to make room for a lavish bathroom with a bathtub and a huge vanity et al, to recreate the dreamy washroom envisioned by the lady of the house.
Meanwhile, a niche from one of the bathrooms was pulled into the living room to carve an informal foyer space which was missing in the apartment’s initial planning. The other two bedrooms were converted into a home office and a study cum workout room, respectively.
The design language developed for this residence — a contemporary minimal one — was consciously woven into every single element and spaces created for Casa Brezza. It is reflected in the clean modern lines of the bespoke furniture pieces; the impressive pieces of accessories and art we curated; the selection of sober yet elegant fabrics for the upholstery and curtains; and the complementing colours selected for each area/room.
We wanted to use minimum materials and austere shades for most parts of the project, and introduce pops of colour and stunning elements to break monotony. For instance, in the seamlessly flowing living-dining, the striking navy blue sofa is balanced by the concrete and white finished walls and the warm teak of the console, the swing, the doors and window frames.
Further, the blue on the bar unit was intentionally planned in blue to sync with the living room sofa set right behind it. The kitchen borrows a darker wood tone from the living, and has a greige tone on the top cabinets to lighten the volume of space. Additionally, the marble tiles used here ties with the backsplash of the bar unit.
In the two study rooms, we used a dramatic wallpaper from Kalakarihaath on the feature wall for the lady’s zone; and a textured greige laminate for the wardrobe.
The other study room sees minimal intervention as we wanted them to use the space according to their needs. Being a compact room, we used a lighter shade of wood for the flooring and laid them in a staggered pattern for noticeable effect. The tightness of this room was given volume by adorning the shutters of the wardrobes with mirrors.
The bathroom attached with this study sees a gorgeous symphony of grey, beige and blue hues. The balcony which is privy to this study, and the living room is the star of this project. We decided on a retro feel which was rendered by black and white printed ceramic tiles — a striking contrast to the green backdrop of the surroundings.
The private chamber has a cosy, warm and pleasing personality. To lighten and (also) highlight the bulkiest piece of furniture in this room, the long wardrobe, we decided to dress the glass shutters in a muted classical design with soft pastel green for the framework. Additionally, a snug daybed was sneaked next to the wardrobe, by the window, for the couple to enjoy a moment of solitude; while a dresser is rested against a fluted wall panel on the other end of the wardrobe. The client wanted to use their existing bed, so we decided to create a pseudo wall frame with fluted wood wainscoting detail to mark the sleeping zone. To complete the look, two dramatic wall lights were handpicked and installed on the wall close to the bed set-up.
The green of the wardrobe flows into the bathroom attached to the master bedroom. Dark green flooring, a soft green terrazzo tiled backdrop for the relaxing bath tub, warm lighting and sober grey walls impart a luxurious and soothing vibe to this large bathroom.
At Casa Brezza we wanted to create a clean and modern design by using hues, shades, finishes and textures, to fashion a layered, warm, and inviting home.
