The first and foremost challenge was to design an Indian home that is dedicated to one of the legendary architects i.e., Ar. Le Corbusier, so not disrespected in any way also not overdoing the overall design. Then, the concept of minimalism, as we all know is a challenge in itself, as designing a space with minimal things but also meeting the need of the client is a greater task. Also, as mentioned earlier, this is a kind of weekend house for the client, so the client’s urge not to spend much on this project but also to have refreshing and comfortable spaces was one of the challenges we faced.

The site offered three bedrooms along with common spaces like a living room, drawing room, kitchen – dining, and a useful terrace. The design, materials, space organization, functionality, and color themes of the house’s common areas and bedrooms are completely distinct. All the habitable spaces were tried and kept well-lit and naturally ventilated as much as possible. All the rooms speak for the user of the space. In all bedrooms, the large door-sized window and door help create a large opening that brings in plenty of natural light and ventilation that supplements the liveliness of the room. The use of lighter materials and elements drags focus towards the quality of space.
The overall chairs used in the house are Corbusier’s chair also known as the Chandigarh chair as it is designed by Le Corbusier.
The approach of minimalism inside the apartment provides better space quality and adds to openness inside rather than cluttering with a heavy quantity of furniture, which helps provide unobstructed views, and improves user interactions and flexibility of space.
Wood as a material is used in many places, pieces of furniture to provide a look of the antique time, and also the cane work used in chairs help enhance the theme of the overall residence. The presence of the Butterfly chair in the living room and Corbusier’s famous chair in the dining set act as a feature to make the design unique and inspired.
The bookshelf in the drawing-room of the residence was inspired by the structure and colors used by Corbusier in the high court designed by him in Chandigarh.
A look at wall-hanging lights adds to the beauty of antiquity inside. The approach of minimalism inside the apartment provides better space quality and adds to openness inside rather than cluttering with a heavy quantity of furniture, which helps provide unobstructed views, and improves user interactions and flexibility of space.
This Indian home is in Chandigarh city, so the influence not being from the immediate context, but was influenced by the broader aspect of the city, designed by Ar. Le Corbusier. Elements like “The Neelam Wall”, which was a clear inspiration from the Neelam theatre that was designed by Corbusier, also the bookshelf compliments the beauty of the Palace of Assembly in Chandigarh, the poster frame in the living room called “Dil Da Ghar” as Chandigarh being called same, also the hand monument as a symbol of Corbusier’s designed city, i.e., Chandigarh. Elements from minor to major all contribute to complimenting the overall quality of space.
