Whether you’re a keen fan of DIY or you’re a professional builder, tools can be an expensive investment, and if they’re not looked after properly, they can quickly become inefficient – making your job much harder. Proper care and routine maintenance of you hand and power tools will make any home improvements or repair projects easier, safer, and more successful.
Hand Tools
Hand tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, wire cutters, and pliers are often left in cold, damp places like sheds and garages. And the potential extreme temperatures and dampness can affect them over time.
Inspect and clean regularly
Get into the habit of cleaning your tools after use before you return them to storage. Wipe them down with a rag or old towel and be sure they are free from dust, grease, and debris. Whilst cleaning them, you should look for any damage or defects. If they have wooden handles, check for any splinters, breaks, and cracks. Check the metal part shows no sign of corrosion or rust. If you do notice any wear, replace them. After cleaning, use an all-purpose oil, such as WD-40 to lubricate tools with adjustable parts. Lightly spray, then wipe down with a rag before storing, to help fight corrosion and rust.
Store tools properly
A proper storage system for your tools is a must. Whether you only have space for a toolbox or storage box, or maybe you have space for a dedicated tool shed, having a designated place where they can be kept clean and dry will help protect your tools and keep them in peak condition.
Ideally, your tools should be stored somewhere with minimal exposure to moisture and temperature changes – and remember to keep tools in their designated places when a job is complete.
Power tools
Power tools such as Milwaukee SDS drills from SGS Engineering, saws, and sanders need routine maintenance too. Because of their mechanical and electrical parts, power tools are more susceptible to problems caused by poor maintenance, dust, and debris.
Keep them clean
Dust and grime can have a serious impact on the life of your power tools. After use, wipe them clean with a rag and then store them. Every so often you’ll want to deep clean them using a damp lint-free cloth.
Store tools correctly
Keep your power tools protected from dust and moisture by storing them properly after use. Ideally, they should be kept in their original cases; this will not only protect them, but it will also keep them organsied.
Inspect for damage
Routinely checking your power tools for damage is a must – especially the power cables. If you see frayed insulation or exposed wires, they should be replaced immediately. Damaged power cords could potentially lead to electric shock and even fire.
