A Tropical House With Essence In A Modernist Manner | Yellow Door Architects

A house becomes a home when the inhabitants feel a sense of belonging and is customized to their specific needs. The client’s brief for their house was: raw, rustic and down to earth. The intent of the design is to experience the tropical essence in a modernist manner. A tropical home can ease stress and inspire positive emotions within the inhabitants.

    visit: Yellow Door Architects

This home features vivid colored walls, subtle marble, and crude concrete flooring and flamboyant colors of fabric for the furniture that enhances the spaces.  Bright colors are used on the soft furnishing in hues of reds, yellows, blues, following the tropical earthy theme. The foyer is highlighted by an eclectic console. A metal screen with tinted glass with highlights of sadarhalli stone is placed strategically to maintain a balance between privacy and openness for the formal living area. Oak finished wood is cladded on to the external surface of the lift core to define the lift which connects the floors.

The formal living area on the lower floor has a beige botochinno marble which adds to the luxe of the space. Natural Travertine stone is used to highlight the TV unit which breaks the monotonous wall. The subtle light from the bamboo hanging lights and the wooden cladding ceiling creates a cozy environment. The walls in the balcony are cladded with bricks and the metal jali screen provides privacy from the neighboring buildings.

The traditional cement tiles in shades of terracotta are implemented to highlight and emphasize the staircase. The timber-clad treads and skirting creates contrast and continues with the theme of an earthy palette.

The dining area has a double-height space; skylights were added to bring in an abundance of natural light into space which was further highlighted with a series of different shapes of concrete lights flowing seamlessly onto the dining table. Reclaimed wood from an old timber door is used to clad an existing beam in the dining area.  Colors of the seas were brought together in the cement tiles which act as a rug below the reclaimed treetop dining table.

The polished cement flooring is juxtaposed with contemporary cement tiles with colors complementing the earthy theme throughout the house and the brass inlay to add a dash of luxury in the flooring.

The informal living area on the upper floor consists of an Indian daybed or the divan, a center table with distress finish and a cane lounge chair creating a sense of comfort and warmth. The underside of the ceiling is clad in banana fiber with highlights of subtle teak. The Furnishing and the décor were delicately handpicked and curated with the client.
