  • Bhuvi in Banglore Finds A Sense Of Belonging Between Global Living And Indian Roots | Stylemykona

In Bhuvi, a courtyard gathers the house around a moment of stillness. Light falls across patterned flooring, timber columns rise from stone bases, and greenery softens the edges between rooms. Beyond, a dining table, upholstered seating and carefully arranged objects suggest a home already inhabited by stories. Located in Sarjapura, Bengaluru, this private residence translates its owners’ return to India into a deeply personal architectural language. Having lived and travelled extensively abroad, they sought a home that could hold their experiences while renewing their connection to the cultural familiarity of an Indian household.

    Courtyard-Centred Living

Set on a 60-by-40-foot plot, the residence brings together architecture by Design Matters, interior design and detailing by StyleMyKona, and execution by Tatva Lifespaces. The shared brief centred on belonging: how could a contemporary home accommodate an international outlook while retaining the emotional resonance of its owners’ roots? The response emerges through spatial relationships and material choices. A courtyard organises the principal living spaces; natural Kota stone establishes continuity underfoot; timber introduces warmth and craft. Together, these elements give the home an identity that unfolds gradually through everyday occupation.

The entrance introduces this sensibility with quiet confidence. A timber door carries an intricate linear motif, offering an early indication of the attention given to familiar patterns and traditional detailing. Inside, pale walls allow the grain of wood and the cool grey flooring to become immediately legible. Slender timber elements mark the transition towards the living area, creating definition while preserving views across the interior. This balance between enclosure and openness recurs throughout Bhuvi, where thresholds are articulated through proportion, framing and changes in material expression.

    Patterned Courtyard Heart

At the centre, the courtyard establishes both a spatial anchor and a shared point of reference. Its slightly lowered patterned floor distinguishes it from the surrounding circulation, giving the space the presence of an interior court. Athangudi-inspired motifs introduce a measured rhythm of colour and geometry, framed by a decorative border. Plants occupy its edges, while a low vessel at the centre keeps the composition intimate. The courtyard remains visible from adjoining areas, allowing movement, conversation and domestic activity to gather around it.

The timber columns are especially expressive. Their turned profiles and carved capitals recall the vocabulary of traditional Indian houses, while substantial grey stone bases connect them visually to the floor. Their placement frames views towards the dining and living spaces, giving the interior a sequence of distinct compositions. Against the restrained background, the columns establish scale and character without overwhelming the rooms. Their warm finish also creates a compelling material relationship with the Kota stone, whose reflective surface catches daylight and traces of the surrounding furniture.

    Grounded Kota Flooring

Kota flooring gives Bhuvi much of its grounded quality. Its grey tones provide a continuous setting for the richer timber surfaces, patterned textiles and small metallic accents. Fine parallel lines within the flooring articulate edges and routes, lending otherwise quiet surfaces a sense of precision. Around the courtyard, this restraint allows the patterned inset to assume greater prominence. The relationship between the two floor treatments is particularly effective: one carries the visual continuity of the home, while the other marks its centre with an unmistakable sense of place.

The living room develops a more layered expression of the same approach. A rose-coloured sofa sits alongside timber seating upholstered in soft blue and deeper patterned tones. Floral cushions, a loosely draped textile and a patterned rug introduce variation at a domestic scale. A timber chest serves as the central table, its solidity balancing the lighter upholstery. Behind the sofa, an arched recess accommodates slender shelves and a collection of sculptural objects. Nearby arched openings repeat its curved outline, bringing coherence to a room assembled from varied colours, textures and forms.

    Cultural Display

Objects receive particular consideration throughout the house. Shelves, niches and cabinetry give collections a place within the interior’s larger composition. Around the courtyard, the Dashavataram display is integrated into a built frame, with figures arranged above a glazed opening and within niches along its sides. Brass lamps complete the arrangement, while planting below introduces another layer of depth. The display connects cultural memory to the daily experience of moving through the house. Its position ensures that these references remain present within ordinary routines, alongside light, greenery and views between spaces.

The dining area continues this interplay between utility and expression. Timber chairs gather around a pale tabletop, with a substantial wooden sideboard nearby. A mirror above the cabinet reflects the interior, extending the visual conversation across the room. An adjacent arched timber display holds smaller objects, echoing the shelving language seen elsewhere. Beyond, green cabinetry introduces a deeper colour into the shared palette. These elements allow the dining space to retain its own identity while remaining closely connected to the courtyard and the wider rhythm of the home.

    Changing Daylight

Daylight gives these material relationships their changing character. Entering through the courtyard and perimeter openings, it reveals the grain of timber, brightens pale walls and produces reflections across the stone. Curtains soften the larger windows, while greenery provides a recurring connection between interior rooms and the spaces beyond. The staircase, visible beside the courtyard, contributes to this continuity through grey treads, dark balusters and a timber handrail. Its straightforward geometry sits comfortably beside the more elaborate columns, demonstrating how different degrees of detail can coexist within a consistent architectural setting.

Bhuvi’s achievement lies in the specificity of these relationships. The courtyard gives gathering a centre; the stone floor connects daily journeys; timber detailing makes craft part of the experience of a room. Colour and collected objects bring the owners’ personalities into that framework, allowing their wider lives to remain visible within a home rooted in India. The result offers a thoughtful account of return: a house shaped by the recognition that belonging can accommodate change, experience and discovery. Here, homecoming finds expression in spaces designed to become increasingly personal through use, where memory has room to settle and everyday life can add its own meaning.
