  • Nilaya Reinterprets Semi-Victorian Elegance Through Kerala’s Material Traditions | Build Beyond

Editor’s Note: Some homes find their identity in the meeting of different traditions, allowing each to bring its own warmth and character. Nilaya in Chennai, designed by Build Beyond, blends Semi-Victorian elegance with the relaxed sensibility of Kerala interiors. Classical proportions, framed arches, and subtle panelling establish a sense of refinement, while warm timber, cane accents, and textured fabrics soften the spaces. The living and dining areas pair traditional furniture with expressive artwork, while the family lounge offers a more intimate setting for everyday life. Each bedroom carries the same material language with its own character, and a boldly coloured powder room adds an unexpected note of playfulness. Through handcrafted details and a thoughtful balance of ornament and restraint, the home brings together regional influences and contemporary comfort, creating interiors that feel timeless yet deeply personal. ~ Yashika Bajaniya

Located in Nungambakkam, Chennai, this 3,800 sq. ft. four-bedroom apartment by Build Beyond, Cochin explores a harmonious blend of Semi-Victorian elegance and the warm, tropical sensibility of Kerala interiors. The design brings together classical
proportions, refined architectural detailing, natural materials and handcrafted elements to create a home that feels sophisticated yet welcoming, expressive yet comfortable.

The central idea was to balance the timelessness of classical interiors with the relaxed character of regional design. Rather than relying entirely on ornate detailing or contemporary minimalism, the apartment finds its identity in the thoughtful combination of both. Subtle panelling, framed arches, carefully proportioned elements and traditional furniture establish a sense of formality, while warm wood finishes, textured fabrics, cane accents and carefully selected colours soften the overall composition.

The result is an interior that feels rooted in tradition without appearing dated. Every space contributes to a larger visual narrative, maintaining a sense of continuity while allowing individual rooms to express their own character.

Living and Dining: A Refined Sense of Tradition

The living and dining areas establish the design language of the home. These spaces are defined by warm timber finishes, layered lighting, expressive artwork and a carefully considered palette that introduces colour without overwhelming the interiors. Cane accents, brass details, and textured fabrics introduce a relaxed, regional character inspired by Kerala’s architectural heritage. The furniture and architectural elements create a quiet sense of formality. Solid wood pieces, traditional silhouettes and detailed finishes bring a sense of permanence, while cane accents and textured upholstery introduce a more relaxed, tactile quality.

The interplay between these elements allows the rooms to feel both elegant and lived-in. Art plays an important role in shaping the atmosphere. Rather than treating artwork as a final decorative addition, the interiors allow it to participate in the overall composition. Carefully positioned pieces create focal points, introduce visual contrast and add personality to the spaces. Their relationship with the surrounding furniture, wall treatments and timber details helps establish a layered and cohesive interior.

The dining area, in particular, becomes a dialogue between art and tradition. A substantial solid wood dining table anchors the room, complemented by classically detailed chairs and curated objects. The furniture establishes a strong visual presence, while natural light and restrained finishes prevent the space from feeling overly formal. The balance between traditional elements and a lighter, more contemporary sensibility gives the dining room an inviting character suited to both everyday use and gatherings.

The Dining space is a quiet dialogue between art and tradition. Solid wood furniture, classic detailing, and curated artifacts ground the room in heritage, while natural light and restrained finishes keep it contemporary and lived-in.

The Family Lounge: An Intimate Retreat

A separate family lounge offers a more informal counterpart to the living and dining areas. Designed around comfort and togetherness, the room adopts a warmer, more intimate atmosphere while remaining connected to the overall design language of the apartment. Rich timber surfaces and detailed woodwork lend depth to the space, while the ceiling treatment reinforces its architectural character. Built-in shelving provides opportunities to display books and personal objects, adding another layer of texture and individuality. The combination of open displays, carefully composed furniture and warm finishes gives the lounge a sense of familiarity.

Comfortable seating and ambient lighting contribute to the relaxed mood. The lighting is considered as part of the experience of the room, creating a softer atmosphere than the more formal shared spaces. The furnishings and objects are arranged to encourage conversation and everyday interaction rather than simply create a visual statement.

This room demonstrates how a consistent design language can accommodate different moods. While the principal living and dining areas express the more formal aspects of the home’s character, the family lounge offers a quieter, more personal setting. The distinction comes not from abandoning the overall aesthetic, but from adjusting the materials, lighting and spatial emphasis to suit the way the room is used.

Bedrooms: Individual Comfort Within a Cohesive Design

The bedrooms continue the apartment’s material and architectural language while allowing for individual expressions of comfort. Across the three bedrooms, the design maintains visual continuity through considered detailing, custom furniture and a restrained approach to ornamentation.

Panelled headboards and custom wardrobes form important elements of the bedroom interiors. They provide structure and visual order, while the use of timber and textured surfaces introduces warmth. Rather than relying on excessive decoration, the rooms derive their character from the relationship between architectural elements, furniture, textiles and finishes.

Each of the three bedrooms is thoughtfully curated to maintain visual continuity while offering individual comfort. Paneled headboards, custom wardrobes, and restrained ornamentation create calm, timeless retreats, with the master bedroom carrying a slightly richer expression of the design language.

The master bedroom carries a slightly richer expression of the design language. Its layered composition combines a defined headboard wall, timber detailing and carefully coordinated furnishings. Textiles and selected accents add softness, while the overall arrangement maintains a sense of calm.

The bedrooms are conceived as timeless retreats. Their restrained ornamentation and consistent material palette allow the architecture to remain the focus, while differences in colour, texture and detailing give each room its own identity. This approach ensures that the private spaces feel connected to the rest of the apartment without becoming repetitive.

    A Distinctive Powder Room

The powder room introduces a more playful expression within the apartment. Its vivid yellow panelling creates a striking visual identity, while deep green cabinetry adds contrast and depth. This combination makes the room distinct from the softer, more restrained palette of the principal living spaces.

The use of colour demonstrates the flexibility of the overall design approach. Although the apartment maintains a consistent architectural language, individual spaces are not restricted to a uniform treatment. The powder room embraces a bolder character while retaining the attention to detailing and material coordination found throughout the home. This contrast adds variety to the experience of moving through the apartment, allowing a smaller space to make a memorable impression.

    Materiality, Craft and Detail

Material selection is central to the character of the project. Warm timber, cane, textured fabrics and carefully finished surfaces create an interior that is experienced as much through touch and atmosphere as through visual composition.

Timber introduces richness and continuity across different spaces, appearing in furniture, panelling and architectural detailing. Its warmth balances the classical elements and helps establish a connection with the tropical character of Kerala interiors. Cane and woven textures provide a lighter counterpoint, bringing an element of regional familiarity to the furniture and furnishings.

The colour palette supports this material-led approach. Rather than depending on a single dominant colour, the interiors use a considered mix of warm neutrals and more expressive accents. These colours create contrast while allowing the natural materials and architectural details to retain their presence.

Craftsmanship is expressed through the careful treatment of proportions, joinery, furniture details and the integration of individual elements. The design relies on the cumulative effect of these decisions rather than on a single dramatic gesture. Each detail contributes to the overall impression of a home that is composed, layered and enduring.

A Home That Balances Elegance and Livability

Apartment Interiors at Amara Vana is ultimately an exploration of balance: between classical detailing and contemporary comfort, regional influence and refined elegance, formal shared spaces and intimate private retreats.

The design does not depend on a singular style or a uniform treatment of every room. Instead, it brings together architectural proportions, warm materials, handcrafted details, traditional furniture and expressive artwork to create a cohesive yet varied interior.

From the formal dining room to the intimate family lounge, from the composed bedrooms to the boldly coloured powder room, each space contributes to the home’s overall identity. The continuity comes through the careful use of materials, detailing and proportion, while the individuality of each room ensures that the interiors remain engaging.

Through this considered combination of tradition, craftsmanship and livability, Build Beyond has created a home that feels elegant without being imposing, detailed without being excessive, and contemporary without losing its connection to regional character. Amara Vana is an enduring expression of interiors designed not merely to be seen, but to be lived in and experienced over time. Overall, the home balances classic detailing with warmth and livability, resulting in interiors that feel elegant, inviting, and enduring.
