Some homes are designed to impress. Others are designed to be lived in. Legacy Home belongs firmly to the latter. It celebrates everyday rituals, evolving lifestyles, and the quiet beauty of spaces that feel deeply personal.

Spread across 2,000 sq. ft. in Andheri West, Mumbai, this eight-month renovation transformed a jodi apartment from the ground up. The home was designed for a vibrant couple whose children have flown the nest, but whose lives remain as dynamic and socially active as ever. The brief was deceptively simple: create a home that feels lighter, calmer, and more functional. The design also needed to accommodate extensive storage within relatively compact rooms. The challenge was to maximise utility, conceal storage seamlessly, eliminate visual clutter, and create an environment that feels effortlessly warm and welcoming.

The resulting aesthetic is best described as Desi Japandi, a thoughtful interpretation of calm, imperfection and comfort. Rather than aspiring to perfection, the home embraces authenticity. It creates spaces that feel lived-in, relaxed, and welcoming instead of staged or sterile.

Designed Around Routines

Every design decision stemmed from an intimate understanding of the homeowners and their routines. The process began with detailed conversations about how they lived, entertained guests, and moved through the home. Even seemingly small details, such as the direction of sunlight that triggered the lady of the house’s migraines, informed the planning. The team also studied the limitations of every room and integrated generous yet discreet storage. They carefully considered natural light and cross ventilation to ensure comfort for homeowners who prefer minimal dependence on air conditioning.

Building Through Change

Executing the project came with its own set of challenges. During the first three months, the homeowners were travelling. The design team managed almost every material selection and design decision remotely through video calls or handled them independently. During the final stages of construction, the homeowners had to live in a single room while the rest of the home underwent renovation. The experience demanded immense patience.

Rafters Solve Constraints

One of the most distinctive interventions lies overhead. The design team faced a substantial beam cutting across the living room and limited ceiling height. They also had to consider the homeowners’ unusual height and integrate both technical and mood lighting. To address these challenges, they transformed the ceiling rafters into a rhythmic architectural feature. The composition resolves multiple practical constraints while preserving both the height and serenity of the space.

Comfort With Character

The home offers every contemporary comfort, including automation, an air-conditioned kitchen, statement lighting, and thoughtfully curated art. These details extend even into the bathroom. Yet its defining quality lies not in these luxuries, but in the way it reflects the people who inhabit it.

Kitchen For Her

The kitchen pays tribute to the lady of the house, an exceptional home chef whose passion shaped the planning of the space. The kitchen is highly organised, practical, and visually discreet. It extends seamlessly into the dining area, allowing her to move effortlessly between both spaces. The design keeps the functional workings of the kitchen concealed.

Beauty Meets Function

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Legacy Home is its remarkable balance between functionality and beauty. Despite its compact footprint, the home accommodates extensive storage while maintaining an uncluttered, visually refined character. Every requirement voiced by the homeowners was addressed without compromise and often exceeded. In the process, the professional relationship between designer and client naturally evolved into something much more personal.

Colour Defines Rooms

Colour becomes a defining language throughout the interiors, with every room expressing its own personality. The common areas use creamy whites that fill the home with warmth and the optimism of sunlight. The master bedroom features sophisticated shades of grey, enlivened with playful accents of yellow. Rich coffee tones paired with a denim-blue ceiling define the guest room. Meanwhile, the hobby room embraces a dramatic burgundy palette. The kitchen introduces a bold composition of black and wood. This material palette subtly continues into the adjoining study.

Rooms With Purpose

While the spatial layout remained unchanged, the purpose of each room evolved significantly. The two former children’s bedrooms had become unorganised storage spaces. The design team reimagined them as a welcoming guest room and a dedicated hobby room. Designed around the couple’s youthful spirit and many passions, the hobby room becomes an informal retreat. It offers a place to sit on the floor, unwind, and simply be themselves. Another carefully considered intervention was the creation of separate wardrobes for him and her. This allows each to maintain independent routines without disturbing the other.

His Personal Space

Equally personal is the space dedicated to the man of the house. A generously comfortable sofa with a footstool anchors the living room for relaxed television viewing, while a meticulously organised made-to-measure wardrobe assigns a place for every belonging. His compact study reflects both his life as a businessman and his active role as an important member of his club, blending organisation with an unmistakable sense of playfulness.
