Anvaya is a home shaped by memory, culture, and a deep love for colour. The designers created it as a modern traditional space that brings together familiar elements from South India with a contemporary way of living.

The team created the duplex by merging two apartments and completely reimagining the layout. They thoughtfully designed every corner to create a cohesive home that functions effortlessly, especially within the constraints of apartment living.

A strong design direction came from the client’s inclination towards a subtle floral language from South India, inspired by Kalamkari. This influence flows across the home through textures and details, adding warmth and a sense of familiarity while still feeling fresh and balanced.

Living & Dining Area: 

The living and dining area is designed as one open, continuous space. As you enter, the staircase is the first thing you notice, leading up to the first floor. Earlier, it was just a metal structure, so we reworked it to match the overall design language of the home. We added wooden detailing along with a tiled backdrop that gives a stone-like finish, bringing in some texture.

The space below the staircase was not very big, so we turned it into a small pet nook for their dog instead of leaving it unused.

Since the space is quite open, we added wooden beading on the ceiling to bring some connection without making it feel heavy.

For the flooring, we added a simple border inlay in the centre of the living room using printed tiles, just to bring in a bit of pattern without making it too loud. All the furniture here is custom-made, keeping the scale and everyday use in mind.

The TV unit has a slightly traditional touch, with a brass chain detail as the highlight. We paired it with a custom floral wallpaper to add a bit of character.

In the dining area, the brick cladding wall becomes a strong focal point. We’ve added storage below along with a bench seating in the centre, so it’s more flexible and can accommodate more people when needed.

Kitchen: 

For the kitchen, we went a little bold with colours and details. You can see it across everything, from the cabinet colours to the kit-kat backsplash tiles, and even the island, which has handpainted tiles along with turned wooden leg details.

At the same time, we tried to balance it out so it doesn’t feel too loud. Terracotta has been used as a base material to keep that warmth, and the green flooring helps connect it back to the rest of the house.

We also wanted to incorporate a puja unit here. Instead of making it look like a typical closed unit, we designed it with an arch on top and kept it semi-open. The café-style shutters add a nice detail while still keeping it functional.

Parents Bedroom: 

The parents’ bedroom was designed to feel calm compared to the rest of the home. Since the wardrobe is slightly on the heavier side, with glass and wallpaper sandwich detailing, we kept the walls simple and let the furniture do most of the work.

The wallpaper has a soft floral pattern with a slightly ethnic touch, adding character without making the space feel busy. 

First Floor – Family Area

One of the favourite corners for the clients is the bar unit that you see as soon as you enter the first floor. This space is a little more playful and expressive compared to the rest of the home, designed around their love for hosting.

It’s a quirky setup, with a blue sea-themed wallpaper as the backdrop, a yellow café-style door, and a pop of colour through the red unit. Instead of relying only on furniture, a lot of the character here comes from these surface elements and colour choices.

The passage here was long and narrow, so we kept the intervention simple. We added beading to break the length and make it feel more balanced. It’s been kept fairly open so it can evolve into a gallery wall over time, with a few artworks added for now.

Master Bedroom

We went slightly dramatic with the master bedroom, with the ceiling becoming the main focal point. The wallpaper on the ceiling adds that extra layer and really defines the space.

We have a poster bed with spindle detailing, which ties back to similar elements used across the home. We went with a teal and mustard colour combination here, keeping it bold but still balanced.

For the wardrobe, we played around with forms instead of keeping it very straight. There’s a mix of arch, semi-arch, and more organic shapes, which makes it feel a little different from the usual.

Home Office

In the home office, we kept it simple but with a bit of character through the wallpaper. A floral print in brighter colours adds a nice pop without feeling too much.

The storage unit is kept simple, mainly for books and stationery. We’ve added a ledge as well, which can be used for small décor or quick-access items.

Closing

Overall, the home comes together as a balance between colour, texture, detail, and everyday functionality. While each space has its own character, there’s a sense of connection through materials, patterns, and small repeating elements.

It’s a home that feels personal to the clients, reflecting their love for colour and slightly quirky details, while still being practical and easy to live in, a space that feels warm, expressive, and truly their own.
