In contemporary Indian cities, the house remains one of the most visible expressions of personal progress. For many middle-class families, moving into a larger home signals a shift in lifestyle, identity, and aspiration. Located on a standard 60′ × 40′ corner plot in Coimbatore, CTTTT House emerged from this condition. Rather than equating luxury with material excess, the project explores how architecture can create aspiration through space, light, proportion, and perception.

Bounded by roads on the north and east, the site offered both visibility and exposure. The challenge was not simply to accommodate a growing family, but to transform a familiar suburban typology into an experience that felt more generous than its physical dimensions might suggest. Volume, light, and visual continuity became the project’s primary architectural tools.
At the centre of the house is a triple-height void that organizes the entire plan. More than a circulation space, it acts as the spatial heart of the home, visually connecting all levels and allowing the house to be experienced as a continuous volume. Movement unfolds through a sequence of overlapping views, reinforcing a sense of openness and connection within everyday domestic life.
The house is organized around a vertical progression of spaces. A double-height living area anchors the ground floor, while private rooms occupy the levels above, culminating in an elevated open-air pavilion. This arrangement reinforces the experience of moving through a continuous volume rather than a series of isolated floors.
Natural light plays a fundamental role in shaping the interior experience. Full-height openings draw daylight deep into the house, while a skylight above the central void allows light to cascade through the building. Existing trees along the western edge filter the harsh afternoon sun into a softer illumination, while passive ventilation strategies contribute to thermal comfort. Together, these elements animate the interiors throughout the day. The interiors are conceived as an extension of the architectural language. Furniture, colour, and materiality remain deliberately restrained, allowing volume, light, and proportion to define the experience of the house.
A sculptural staircase occupies the centre of this composition. Conceived as an inhabitable object within the triple-height void, it weaves through the volume rather than merely connecting floors. Together with full-height glazing, it reinforces the upward movement of space and acts as a visual anchor between levels.
A series of vertical elements and horizontal bands form the project’s defining architectural language. Appearing across the façade, interiors, circulation spaces, and terrace pavilion, they frame views, filter light, establish rhythm, and visually amplify height.
Balanced by continuous horizontal bands and deep cantilevered planes, they lend the house a presence beyond its physical dimensions. The repetitive linear rhythm of these elements in the front elevation inspired the project’s name—CTTTT House.
At its core, the project is an exercise in calibrated ambition. Using familiar materials and conventional construction methods, it demonstrates how architectural value can emerge from the careful orchestration of volume, light, and proportion.
