House of Talrejas sits on South City Canal Road, one of Ludhiana’s prestigious addresses. It is envisioned as more than a conventional retail store. It is conceived as a luxury retail experience rooted in Indian craftsmanship. Material memory and spatial storytelling shape the interiors. Together, they create an immersive setting for men’s and women’s wear.
The client brief called for a luxury retail store offering ethnic men’s and women’s wedding wear with bespoke tailoring. At the same time, the space needed to retain an air of mystery. The space needed to feel deeply Indian and traditional, but not overtly revealing, allowing the store to unfold gradually as one moves through it. The intent was to create curiosity, discovery, and emotional engagement rather than instant visual gratification.

As one enters the store, the first interaction is with a 150-year-old artisanal metallic jaali. Positioned strategically, it disrupts the direct visual axis and establishes a foyer-like threshold. This intentional obstruction heightens curiosity—offering glimpses without revealing the entire store, maintaining the element of mystery promised in the brief.
Beyond this threshold lies a long, wide corridor that acts as a ceremonial spine for the store.Tapered wooden ceilings draw the eye along the corridor, creating a strong sense of direction. Chandeliers placed at intervals add grandeur and reinforce the feeling of procession.
To the left of the corridor unfolds the men’s ethnic and bespoke tailoring section. The space is anchored by a large, beautifully hand-crafted cutting table, symbolizing the heart of bespoke craftsmanship. Surrounding it are classic Chesterfield sofas, antique trunks repurposed as storage and tables, and carefully curated seating that encourages pause and interaction.
The ceiling here becomes a design statement—entirely clad in lakhori bricks, an often forgotten architectural treasure. Used unconventionally on the ceiling, the bricks introduce texture, warmth, and historical depth while maintaining a minimal yet unmistakably Indian aesthetic.
On the right, concealed behind a series of grand Burma teak mehraabs, lies the women’s bridal wear section. The mehraabs—crafted from approximately 100-year-old teak—act as both architectural elements and symbolic gateways, hiding and revealing the space in a controlled manner.
Inside, the ambiance shifts to one of softness and opulence. Silk-textured walls, a central hand-mosaic chandelier, and a carefully composed seating arrangement overlook a dramatic feature wall finished in lakhori bricks. Traditional mirrors, flanked by mannequins, enhance depth and reflection, amplifying the richness of the bridal ensembles on display.
Beyond the women’s trial rooms lies one of the most distinctive features of the store—the bridal ramp area. Designed as an experiential extension of the trial process, this space allows brides to experience their attire in motion.
The ramp features end-to-end carpeting and silk-textured walls. Hand-mosaic chandeliers span the ceiling, with each piece carrying its own distinct character. The ceiling becomes the focal point—celebrating imperfection, individuality, and craftsmanship.
A defining aspect of the project is its deep commitment to authentic Indian craftsmanship. The design sources materials from across India, prioritising age, patina, and handcraft.
The flooring is crafted entirely from pine wood, with each plank hand-cut, installed, and polished on site. This process enhances the natural grain and lends a lived-in warmth to the space.
Nearly a century-old Burma teak features throughout the store in custom-crafted mehraabs, jaalis, furniture, trunks, tables, and seating. Each piece is thoughtfully adapted to contribute to a cohesive narrative rather than exist as a standalone artifact.
The store engages all five senses through its design. Visual drama works alongside a curated soundscape, a bespoke brand fragrance, and tactile materials that invite touch. The result is a fully immersive environment that transforms shopping into a ceremonial experience.
Adjoining the ramp is the main cabin, designed to feel intimate and exclusive.Micro-concrete walls create a subtle contrast against the richly detailed public areas. A standout feature here is the sourcing of original Indian Parliament President chairs, each bearing unique serial numbers—an intentional gesture to offer clients a sense of authority, legacy, and royal treatment.
“House of Talrejas is rooted in maximalism with meaning.” Every elementmaterial, lighting, furniture, scent, and sound has been curated with intention. The design celebrates Indian heritage without nostalgia, presenting ethnic wear retail through a contemporary yet deeply cultural lens.
This project stands as a testament to meticulous detailing, respect for craftsmanship, and the belief that retail spaces can be experiential narratives rather than mere showrooms.”
