Tucked into the quiet, tree-lined streets of Jayanagar, Eravoo Learning Centre began as the transformation of a beautiful old home into a calm, nurturing environment for children to learn, explore and grow.
From our very first conversation with the client, her vision felt deeply intentional. She wanted the school to move away from conventional learning environments and instead feel slower, softer and more connected to nature. The design draws from Montessori philosophies and Japanese ideas of simplicity and independence. It creates a school where children feel free, curious, and deeply engaged with the world around them

Editor’s Note: Some spaces are designed not just to be used, but to be experienced, explored, and remembered. Eravoo Learning Centre transforms an old home into a nurturing environment where children can learn through curiosity, movement, and connection with nature. Rather than following the structure of a conventional school, the design embraces simplicity, warmth, and freedom, allowing every corner to support a child’s natural way of discovering the world. Through thoughtful reuse, natural materials, and spaces that encourage independence, the centre creates a balance between learning and play. The location itself played an important role in shaping the project. Situated on a corner plot with a park directly opposite, the surroundings naturally became an extension of the learning experience. The design encourages children to spend time outdoors, walk barefoot, and engage with textures, movement, and nature. This approach allows learning to feel instinctive rather than rigidly structured.
The existing structure came with both charm and complexity. Surrounded by dense greenery and spread across multiple levels, the home received gentle, filtered natural light through the day. Rather than altering its character completely, we chose to work with it — opening up windows where possible, introducing a subtle Japanese-inspired façade, and creating interiors that feel tactile, warm and grounding.
Across the 5,000 sq. ft. space, the design focused on nurturing independence and comfort. Open shelves, accessible storage, interactive walls and flexible learning areas encourage children to move freely and engage with their environment intuitively.
The design uses natural wood, muted finishes, and soft materials to create a calming environment. Together, these elements prevent visual overstimulation and encourage a sense of ease. One of the most special spaces within the school is the culinary lab and art studio — envisioned as a space for unrestricted creativity and motor based skills.
The client strongly believed that children should feel free to experiment, make mistakes and embrace messiness as an essential part of learning, and that philosophy shaped many aspects of the school. The ground floor was designed primarily for younger children, allowing easier movement and accessibility, while the upper levels accommodate older age groups.
Existing rooms were carefully adapted into classrooms, alongside administrative spaces, support areas and even a culinary lab designed to encourage sensory exploration, motor skills, and everyday independence through hands-on activities.
What made this project especially meaningful for us was how closely the design process remained aligned with the client’s philosophy. Every decision — spatially and emotionally — was centred around creating an environment children would genuinely enjoy being in.
