Set within a compact space of a 1400 sq ft plot in Indore, and tightly bordered along its west and north edges, the house withdraws from its immediate surroundings to construct an inward world. It does not negotiate the city through openings; instead, it turns inward and uses light as the primary medium to form, perceive, and inhabit space. At its center, a double-height dining court emerges as the quiet core of the house. More than a room, it is a luminous void that gathers the life of the home around it. In a plan that might have remained linear and constrained, this central volume introduces depth and continuity, drawing daylight deep into the interior and allowing it to shift, settle, and transform the atmosphere across the day.

A large semi-circular opening defines this space, paired with a skylight above that brings the sky into constant presence. The arch, deliberately exaggerated in scale, lends a subtle monumentality to the domestic setting. It does not simply frame a view but holds light itself, forming an aperture that momentarily contains the sky above the everyday act of dining.
The house within the compact space organizes itself around this inner volume. Ground and first floors remain visually and spatially connected, dissolving conventional separations between levels. Movement is never incidental; it is drawn repeatedly toward the center. Circulation, pause, and gathering unfold in relation to this shared core, shifting the house from a collection of rooms into a continuous, lived field.
The staircase wraps around the court, turning ascent into an unfolding sequence. As one moves upward, the perception of space is constantly recalibrated—glimpses of the arch, the dining floor below, and the framed sky above remain in quiet dialogue. This vertical layering allows light and volume to extend beyond their immediate boundaries, reinforcing a sense of cohesion across the house.
Materiality remains restrained, allowing light and form to take precedence. Soft whites, warm wood, and muted greens accompany the curved geometries, while textured surfaces and sculpted walls catch and diffuse incoming light. Shadows deepen, edges soften, and surfaces begin to register time—transforming light from illumination into presence.
Within its tight urban condition, the house finds openness not through expansion, but through precision.Proportion, section, and void are carefully orchestrated to create a sense of release within constraint. The inward gaze becomes a strength, producing a domestic environment that is at once protected andexpansive.
Where Light Gathers is less an object than an atmosphere one shaped by the slow accumulation of light, movement, and inhabitation. Here, light does not simply enter; it is held, refracted, and allowed to linger, quietly defining the rhythms of everyday life within a compact space.
