  • This 1200 sq. ft. Urban Residence Is A Study In Restraint And Mindfulness | Msttudio

Nestled within the vibrant neighborhood of Agrawal Palazzo in Borivali, Urban Zen is a 1200 sq. ft. 3BHK residence envisioned as a calm refuge from Mumbai’s relentless pace. Designed by Maitri Doshi, Founder and Principal Designer of Msttudio. The home is a study in restraint, mindfulness, and modern contemporary expression. It celebrates the poetry of clean lines, nuanced textures, and a palette that mirrors the serenity of natural elements—thoughtfully articulated through every room.

The project began with a simple yet compelling vision: to create a home that feels like an exhale. A quiet pause amid the density of the city. Maitri crafted this narrative using a minimalist palette rooted in soft greys. They ground the home, eventually flowing into rich blacks that provide visual depth. This disciplined color story becomes the backbone of the design. To offset the monochromatic foundation, the furniture across the living, dining, kitchen, and bedroom areas is kept primarily white. It is clean, sculptural, and understated. Subtle accents of muted blues and greens introduce whispers of color just where the eye needs a moment of rest.

    The Flooring

A defining element of Urban Zen is the Symphony Grey marble flooring that spreads uninterrupted across the entire 1200 sq. ft. residence. Its gentle veining acts like a natural artwork underfoot and immediately establishes a harmony that spans the home. The marble provides more than just aesthetic continuity—it becomes the silent collaborator in the home’s dialogue of calm, amplifying natural light and anchoring the minimalist visual language. Every room, though meticulously curated with its own color palette and function-specific custom storage, connects seamlessly through this consistent flooring, allowing the home to feel larger, more fluid, and deeply cohesive.

    Design Philosophy

Maitri’s design philosophy for Urban Zen gravitates toward purity—spaces free of clutter, forms that are honest, and materials that speak softly yet with confidence. The walls are treated with ribbed panels, adding a gentle tactile rhythm that elevates otherwise clean planes. The monochrome palette—soft greys, off-whites, charcoal accents—creates a soothing backdrop against which every piece of furniture, artwork, and accessory has been placed with intention.

    Living Room

In the living room, plush sofas in muted tones echo comfort while retaining a tailored presence. Their pastel-accented throw pillows bring warmth without breaking the overall zen-like continuity. The nested center tables, sculptural yet understated, hold curated pieces—an hourglass, a ceramic vase, a minimal tray—that enrich the room without crowding it. A large green indoor plant placed adjacent to a ribbed wooden panel infuses life and organic softness, its vibrant foliage contrasting beautifully against the neutral interior finishes.

    Detailed Elements

Black fittings—sleek, minimal, and precise—serve as the home’s quiet punctuation marks. Whether in the form of wall lights, switches, hardware, or door frames, these dark elements cut through the pale background with clarity, creating a refined interplay of light and shadow. They subtly reinforce the contemporary urban theme while grounding the softer design elements.

    1200 sq. ft.

    Dining Area

The dining area continues the narrative of balance and restraint. A clean, modern dining table paired with a combination of chairs and a bench offer visual ease and functional flexibility. The large wall-mounted clock—with its minimal design and warm golden hands—acts as a sculptural focal point.

    1200 sq. ft.

Behind the dining area, a compact yet elegant service counter integrates storage and display with finesse. A monochromatic abstract artwork forms a dynamic contrast against the otherwise calm dining palette.

    Kitchen

The kitchen, with its modern green and white cabinetry, offers a refreshing departure from the living and bedroom spaces while still staying true to the home’s overarching palette. The olive-green lower cabinetry is both soothing and stylish, adding a touch of color that feels organic and unforced. The sleek white countertops maintain the minimalist aesthetic while ensuring durability and practicality. The linear layout of the kitchen optimizes workflow, with everything placed exactly where it should be—unobtrusive, functional, and harmonious. Matte finishes, clean handle-less drawers, and an uncluttered backsplash make the kitchen feel as aesthetically refined as the rest of the home.

    Bedroom

In the bedroom, the sense of serenity deepens. The space is designed to cocoon its inhabitants, using a palette that is even softer, more muted, and deeply restful. The bed, upholstered in a gentle grey, stands against a backdrop of ribbed panels framing a central slab of white marble with subtle grey veining—bringing architectural presence and visual tranquility. This combination of ribbing and marble creates a motif of layered textures, reinforcing the language established in the living area while giving the bedroom its own personality.

    Accessories

A tall, asymmetrical black-framed mirror adds verticality and elegance, reflecting light and making the room feel even more expansive. The bedside units, minimal and thoughtfully accessorized, echo the same sculptural restraint seen throughout the home. Natural light from large French windows floods the room, creating a dialogue between the indoors and the urban skyline outside. This openness enhances not only the physical brightness of the room but also the emotional spaciousness one feels upon entering.

    Natural light

One of the most defining features of Urban Zen is the way it interacts with natural light. The large French windows across the home are not merely architectural elements; they are the conduits through which the home breathes. Light pours in generously, highlighting the softness of the palette, gliding over the marble flooring, and subtly enhancing the textures on the ribbed walls. This interplay between light and material creates a constantly shifting experience of the space—gentle mornings, bright afternoons, and serene evenings.

Maitri’s intention for the home was not just to craft beautiful rooms but to curate an experience—one where residents can transition effortlessly between entertaining, unwinding, working, or simply existing. Every choice, from the furniture to the accessories, storage, lighting, and materials, was made to support this holistic sense of calm and completeness. The design never overwhelms; instead, it quietly supports and elevates the life lived within it.

    Minimalism

Minimalism, often misinterpreted as cold or sparse, takes on a warm, wholesome presence in Urban Zen. This project proves that spaces can be pared down yet soulful, sleek yet inviting, restrained yet richly textured. It demonstrates that contemporary interiors, when approached with sensitivity and purpose, can become sanctuaries of mindfulness.

In Urban Zen, Msttudio presents an interior language that prioritizes clarity, balance, and softness. The 1200 sq. ft. home stands as a testament to how thoughtful design—guided by simplicity and strengthened by material harmony—can create not just a place to live, but a sanctuary that nurtures the spirit.
