The Varnam Edit is a deeply personal 3,000 sq. ft. south Indian home design residence located in Adarsh Premia, Banashankari, Bangalore. It is designed by Swati Seraan and her team at By The Riverside for a remarkable mother-daughter duo, Mrs. Bhagya Devi and Ms. Kavya.
This South Indian Home Design Is An Epitome Of Comfort In Tradition | By The Riverside
This home is more than a living space. It’s an emotional landscape rooted in South Indian tradition, shaped by resilience, and crafted with a profound sense of identity.
The design brief was to create a South Indian home design where every space felt grounded. It should be culturally rich and emotionally resonant, while allowing room for modern comfort and flow.
At the core of the layout are three bedrooms, a media room (repurposed from a fourth bedroom), a warm and layered living and dining area, and a functional kitchen, all designed to maximize natural light, openness, and movement. The spatial arrangement subtly divides private and public zones while maintaining visual cohesion and tactile continuity.
Central to the design language are authentic Chettinad wooden pillars, used both structurally and symbolically, alongside a curated mix of Moroccan and handmade South Indian tiles, custom-carved wooden furniture, and brass accents that reflect the clients’ love for tradition.
A rich material palette—featuring wood, stone, brass, silk, and hand-finished surfaces—evokes a sensory narrative that connects each room while allowing individual expression.
The home draws inspiration from temple art, South Indian textiles, and festive color palettes, translated through contemporary craftsmanship.
The biggest challenge was achieving a delicate balance between cultural depth and modern lightness, ensuring the home remained breathable and uncluttered despite its ornate influences.
Each design decision—from flooring to furniture—was led by meaning, memory, and intentionality. The emotional significance of the home is amplified by the context in which it was created: a period of personal transition, relocation, and quiet strength.
In many ways, this project is a tribute to two fearless women who knew what they wanted—a home that isn’t trendy, but timeless; not loud, but bold; not just beautiful, but deeply theirs.
As Swati Seraan reflects, “The Varnam Edit isn’t just a project—it’s a homecoming.” With color, soul, and South in every corner, this home is an honest expression of legacy, healing, and the enduring power of design rooted in culture and identity.
