A thoughtful exploration of how tradition can exist within the framework of minimalism, this residential apartment is where art doesn’t just beautify but defines the architecture itself. Guided by the core theme of ‘Indian traditional aesthetic with a minimal contemporary approach’, the interiors reflect a seamless integration of cultural depth and modern restraint in its soulful spaces. The design philosophy centres on crafting a space that feels soulful yet understated, where every material, element, and artwork is chosen with intent. The client’s deep-rooted appreciation for Indian art and natural materials laid the foundation for a design that feels timeless. The designers incorporated natural finishes, craftsmanship, and traditional Indian art forms like ‘Pichhwai’ and ‘Gond’ as central design statements.
Soulful Spaces Come Alive in This Rustic Home Reflecting Minimal and Cultural Depth | Yashesh Shukla & Associates
At the very entrance, this narrative begins with a lime-finished grey wall and hand-painted storage unit that sets a subdued, earthy tone. The flooring is a carefully crafted inlay of white marble and Jaisalmer stone within green Kota stone that offers a quiet richness that continues throughout the home.
This understated yet expressive passage serves as a warm preview of what follows. The living area is defined by openness, natural light and minimal teak wood furniture. Clean lines alongwith warm tones allow Indian elements textures and materials to shine through with grace.
The dining area adjacent to the living space, with an open-space planning concept, features a striking installation of ‘Mati Tavdi’- a sculptural terracotta form hand-painted with white motifs, adding a layer of cultural storytelling to its soulful spaces.
The puja room is a tranquil sanctum where a large ‘Pichhwai’ painting forms the spiritual and visual centerpiece.
In the master bedroom, a carved Mandana stone slab anchors the bed-back wall, complemented by custom-designed teak wood furniture. A vibrant ‘Gond’ painting infuses the room with artful serenity.
The son’s bedroom, designed with space-efficiency in mind, features a large writing desk in-sync with the bed and a muted palette highlighted by a blue textured accent wall, adding youthfulness without overwhelming the space.
The inspiration behind the project lies in the seamless blending of artistic heritage with architectural clarity. Materials like lime-washed walls, terracotta tones, grey textures and solid teak wood furniture come together to craft an environment that is warm yet minimal, rooted yet refined. However, staying true to this vision came with its share of challenges.
One of the major hurdles was the insistence on using authentic materials. Choosing natural Kota stone instead of tiles and solid teak wood in place of veneer or laminates meant higher costs and a longer execution time. Convincing the client of their long-term value, both in durability and in preserving the integrity of the aesthetic of the soulful spaces.
Equally demanding was the application of lime texture finishes across the home. Being a less commonly used material, it involved an exhaustive sampling process with multiple vendors to achieve the right texture, shade and consistency. The effort, though intensive, was pivotal in capturing the warm soul of the interiors.
Every corner of this house echoes restraint, every texture tells a story and every object holds a purpose. It’s a home that doesn’t just reflect a lifestyle, but a deeply personal, culturally enriched point of view that could be thoughtfully captured!
