  • Pushkarni Channels cultural Continuity With Open Floor Plan | HabitArt Architecture Studio

Rooted in Tradition, Designed for Reflection with an open floor plan design. Pushkarni is more than a home; it is a contemporary sanctum that channels stillness, reflection, and cultural continuity. Pushkarni Mane (Ma-ney in Kannada, meaning “home”) was envisioned as a spatial pause, a meditative interlude in the otherwise hurried rhythm of modern life.

The design brief was elemental yet profound: to create a residence that radiates warmth, comfort, and understated elegance. Our response embraced a minimalist, contemporary language while drawing deeply from the material and symbolic richness of Indian heritage. The result is a home that marries the clarity of modern architecture with the soulfulness of tradition.

    Spatial Narrative & Materiality

The architectural layout unfolds through a restrained, open floor plan arrangement, where light and movement are choreographed with intent. This spatial quietude serves as a neutral canvas for a richly layered material palette—warm-toned timber, handwoven rattan, patinated brass, and textured stone—each chosen for its tactility and resonance over time.

Earthy pigments and botanical motifs, echoing the lush tropical surroundings, weave an unbroken dialogue between interior and nature. Like the water in a Pushkarni—a stepped temple well—these materials reflect not only light, but also memory, ritual, and a deeper cultural rhythm.

Living & Dining: Where Stillness Meets Story

The living and dining areas are defined not by walls but through careful zoning and curated furniture groupings. Custom seating by Tusker Katha anchors the living space atop a hand-knotted wool rug by Waree, while a bespoke TV panel in natural veneer offers a subtle sculptural focal point. A fluted-glass and stone credenza adds a delicate texture and quiet luxury.

In the dining, a bespoke concrete-top table by Thofa—detailed with brass inlay—reimagines traditional craft in a modern form. The foyer console, made from Banpu wood sourced from the Western Ghats and accented with brass collars, reinforces the home’s devotion to artisanal detail. A custom-built crockery unit with cane-infilled shutters transforms functional storage into a display of heirlooms and collected curios, where utility meets storytelling.

    Kitchen: Rituals of Everyday Beauty

The kitchen embraces a palette of sage-green PU-finished cabinetry, catching the warm glow of west-facing light. Whimsical tropical-patterned tiles bring a playful counterpoint, while bespoke brass hardware introduces tactile richness. Here, the act of cooking becomes a design experience—celebrating the daily ritual as an aesthetic and sensory pleasure.

    Bedrooms: Personal Sanctuaries

Each bedroom builds on the home’s central material vocabulary of teakwood, rattan, brass, and forest greens, yet introduces its own bespoke variations in joinery, furnishings, and art. These subtle shifts create an intimate sense of identity for each space, while maintaining a cohesive design language across the home.

The master bedroom leans toward a slightly more ornate expression, anchored by a graceful two-poster bed set against a backdrop of simple floral wallpaper. A sleek TV unit balances the room’s visual weight, while rattan-inset wardrobe shutters bring a warm, tactile softness to the storage. The palette is a refined play of neutrals and wood, creating a calm yet characterful retreat—a space where elegance and ease coexist effortlessly.

The son’s bedroom takes a more streamlined approach, with tall mirrored wardrobes from Aristo enhancing light and creating an illusion of greater space. A soft upholstered bed and an attached study balance the warmth of wood with gentle, cushioned textures. The blend of modern elements with traditional touches ensures the room feels both grounded and youthful, functional yet timeless.

The daughter’s bedroom explores a subtle tropical undertone, blending the warmth of wood with lush green accents to create a calm yet refreshing environment. A spindle wood bed brings artisanal charm, while cane-netted wardrobes add texture and lightness. A solid hardwood study anchors the room, ensuring functionality without breaking the quiet, nature-inspired mood.

    A Home that Holds Stillness

Pushkarni is not just a structure—it is a reflection pool for the soul. It evokes the essence of the ancient water tank not in its physical form, but in its role as a place to pause, gather, reflect, and renew.

Here, craftsmanship becomes ritual, and design slows down to make space for meaning. Every line, junction, and surface carries an enduring sense of calm, rooted in context and enriched by culture. Pushkarni is a timeless retreat—an architecture of quiet dignity, where tradition breathes effortlessly within the contemporary.
