    Design Philosophy

The design philosophy behind Chandroth hinges on the belief that nature should not be viewed from a distance, but rather, one should live in harmony with it. With this vision in mind, every aspect of the house is thoughtfully crafted. By using natural materials in their most authentic forms.

    Organic Architecture Elements

Nature seamlessly interweaves into the home, from the floors to the walls, ceilings, and pillars. The design leaves laterite stones, bricks, and rubble exposed in their raw, earthy textures. Creating an organic architectural aesthetic that feels timeless and deeply rooted in the region’s rich traditions.

    Two Zones of the House

At the heart of the design lies the separation of spaces into two distinct zones: private and semi-private. This thoughtful division is accomplished using study laterite walls that evoke a sense of nostalgia for the residents. The client is from Kannur, has deep ties to this material as his father once owned a laterite quarry. This connection to the past is more than a structural choice.

    Climatic Considerations

Chandroth’s connection with its environment goes beyond just material choices. The architecture encourages its residents to immerse themselves in the ever-changing seasons of Kerala. The home adapts to the tropical climate, offering natural air conditioning and temperature-balancing mechanisms that work in harmony with the surroundings. It focuses not only on the internal spaces but also on the external environment, ensuring the well-being of its inhabitants through thoughtful design.

    Living Area

This fusion produces a unified, well-balanced living area, ensuring each style enhances the others. Additionally, by blurring the lines between interior and outdoor spaces, the design highlights the significance of this interaction.

    Connecting Inside Out

A sense of connection with the landscape is fostered by the residence’s movement, which makes it easy to move from the interior into nature. The landscaping of Chandroth has been curated to suit the tropical climate of Kerala, further enhancing the home’s environmental sensitivity.

The lush greenery surrounding the residence plays a crucial role in regulating the temperature, absorbing the heat and improving air quality. This green space not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also ensures that the home remains cool and comfortable, naturally.

    Celebrating Modern Living

In conclusion, Chandroth is more than just a home, it is a revolutionary approach to residential architecture. By combining sustainable materials, thoughtful design, organic architecture, and a deep respect for the environment, Chandroth sets a new standard for modern living.

    Blending Nature & Architecture

It is a home where nature and architecture co-exist in perfect harmony, a place where the rhythms of life and nature merge into one. Chandroth is not just a building; it is an experience, one that transforms the way we think about living spaces.

    Embedding Biophilic Principles

In Chandroth, we wanted to integrate biophilic design principles into every element, ensuring that residents maintain a strong connection with nature in all parts of the home, including the washroom.

    Washroom Design

The floor of the washroom is a unique blend of pebbles, green oxide, and wood, carefully chosen to evoke the natural textures and colors found in the surrounding landscape. This combination not only enhances the aesthetic but also serves a functional purpose, offering a durable yet visually calming surface that encourages a sense of tranquility. Green oxide adorns the walls, adding a vibrant touch of color that ties seamlessly into the nature-inspired design theme. The use of this material further connects the interior with the outdoors, emphasizing the seamless flow of natural elements throughout the space.

To ensure the washroom maintains a fresh and clean environment, we incorporated natural ventilation by placing plants strategically within the space. These plants not only enhance the biophilic design but also contribute to the overall air quality, creating a healthier environment for the residents. The inclusion of plant life serves as a reminder of nature’s vitality, offering a calming, natural presence that elevates the everyday experience of using the washroom.

    Exploring Green Oxide

But our exploration of green oxide doesn’t end in the washroom. We also used it in the pool area, where it creates a seamless visual transition from the interior to the exterior. By experimenting with green oxide in this area, we were able to design a space that perfectly blends with the surrounding nature, enhancing the sense of continuity between the built environment and the natural landscape. The result is an outdoor pool area that feels like an extension of the natural world, encouraging relaxation and a deeper connection with the environment.

    Material Palette

The choice of materials used throughout Chandroth further reinforces this bond with nature. The stonework includes locally sourced materials like laterite, rubble, and clay bricks. They not only draw deeply from the region’s architectural traditions but also harmonise the structure with its surroundings.

Laterite, with its rich, earthy tones, provides a sense of permanence and connection to the land. The use of rubble in flooring, left exposed for a raw and natural look, enhances the tactile experience of the space.

By combining these materials and elements, Chandroth represents a living space that isn’t just a house but a thoughtful integration of architecture and nature. Each design choice, from the biophilic elements in the washroom to the seamless transitions in the pool area. It ensures that the residents experience the natural world in every corner of their home.

The use of local, natural materials not only contributes to sustainability but also strengthens the emotional connection between the residents and the land. Further, making Chandroth a true testament to the idea that architecture should not only reflect nature but also embrace it.
